Canadian feelings for America?

I am an American citizen who wants to travel to Canada in the near future so I was wondering what are Canadians' opinion of the U.S.?

We like Americans, but some of them, like every society can get on your nerves. Dont worry, you will love Canada and we will love you. You will probably want to end up living here one day. Welcome to Canada, enjoy your trip.

Canadians are a polite bunch generally. So, they will be very proud when Americans visit the country. They are, however, getting more vocal since 9/11 and the Iraqi War. Expect some questioning in that area, but also expect to have a wonderful, warm trip and respect given.

I've never had any problems. Canada is a very large and beautiful country. I also like the people and have met many who are tops. Of course there are exceptions - - -scwerballs on both sides of the border.

Don't worry... be happy

Relationship is good, just try to don't forget that America is a continent. USA is a country within America as well as Canada is.

America is a great CONTINENT.

We, Canadians, are fine with everyone unless they act like know-it-all obnoxious pricks. We don't care for Bush talk too much nor do we care about your ridiculous gun laws that some Americans like to brag so much about. Oh and the US isn't the centre of the universe.

So, if you're a genuinely nice person then you can expect the same treatment.

Nicole
Canadians have their opinions about the US but they are generally polite to strangers / visitors.

U.S citizens are welcome guests, but like all guests a little tolerance and respect goes a long ways. Our values are very similar even though so of what we do will probably seem strange. Like gravy on fries and hockey rules..

Isnt that one of the Canadian provinces? (kidding).

Well its like this, be polite, be nice, dont wave the American flag around, dont say this or that is better in the USA.

Dont call our money "funny money", dont come with the attitude that Cdns are uneduated, log cabin dwelling, unsophisticated eskimos,

DONT say "gee I thought it was always freezing cold in Canada" dont ask if Bush is our president, and dont ask someone living in Vancouver if they know your buddy Jim in Montreal -

Canada is the second biggest country in the world, dont ask for Canadian bacon, or where you can rent an igloo, dont say "gee I didnt know Canada had cities, or airports, or schools, or whatever".

Dont ask if we can speak "Indian" or "Eskimo". Dont say you are so surprised to find out we have TV.

When its 35C outside, dont think its farenheit and show up in your winter clothing, dont ask where you can go skiing in July, dont bring your ski do or show shoes. Dont ask where you can get a ride on a dog sled -

Dont use the phrase Toronto Canada, or Vancouver Canada or anywhere Canada, we have Provinces just like you have states.

Above all do NOT say I am an American and I expect to be treated like someone special, and do NOT under any circumstances say we should be thrilled you are spending money here because yours is worth so much more than ours is. It isnt anymore and what difference does it make? You are STILL paying the SAME price for something no matter what currency you use.

DO use Canadian currency while you are here.

If you can do all that you should be fine. I know, we tend to be a tad sensitive because of all the slurs we get from you Americans.

Oh yah DONT ask what Canadians think of the US, NOT a good idea. :-) Dont be surprised if people passing you on the sidewalk smile and say hello to you. Welcome to Canada, bring your camera and your smile !!

Basically, give respect - get respect. :)

I agree with the others though - don't talk politics. Just be friendly.

Using American $$ is a pain for most businesses. Please exchange for Canadian $ for the smaller purchases and use MC/Visa for other things.

Robert K
Americans are ok.
could have better neighbors, could be worse.
Just don't start talking about politics or you'll never hear the end of it.

aviationfan
generally good i think

HAPA CHIC
agree with Master of Geography comments alot of people I know in Canada are not extremly delighted with americans but at the same time we are extremly polite to everyone it is in our nature and will still takke a traveller on their individual bases.Go ahead you'll have a good time in Canada

I have no problem with U.S. nor Americans.

I think there's widespread fear or hatred of the current President et al, but in general Americans are liked.

Don't be racist. Don't be homophobic. Figure out what a kilometre is ... and above all else, don't say "I love Canada, it should be part of the United States."

Being an American citizen living in Ontario has been good.
You have pockets of trash talking Canadians about US behind your back but very polite to your face. US Politics & gun laws seem to drive the people here. Canadians are basicly the opposite in beliefs as your gardens variety American. It's very nice here tho, I like some of the differences between US/Canada & don't like some. All in all it's a very nice living situation and Canadians do like Americans for the most part.

We like Americans =) You'll find many Canadians don't really notice/care what nationality you are... we're such a big tossed salad anyway (opposed to the melting pot)
Just don't bring in American politics, and you'll be fine!

TJ
A lot of people I know (I live in Canada) hate all Americans and everything American

I have no problem with Americans though
