Canadian money?

Hey, why is Canadian money coloured? I mean, other than looking more interesting, is there a specific reason?

Its colored coded primarily to:

- Distinguish the difference in amount more easily. It is nice to open my wallet and quickly know which bill to grab by the colour.

- Security reasons; it makes it more difficult to counterfeit a colored bill. It also has a distinguishable watermark and rough areas on the bill which makes it a very difficult bill to counterfeit.

Other than US money, name a currency that isn't coloured? And even the US is using more colour than they use to. So, the first answer is that it is the world wide standard. Secondly, because we can.

Colour makes it easier to distinguish different types of bills, especially for visually impaired and in a dark place like a bar.

It also makes it harder to counterfeit, especially back in the day when counterfeiting with printing presses and having to duplicate several colours exactly. Today, with great printers and photocopiers out there, they have other counterfeit measures. BUT multicolours still keeps the armature counterfeiters out.

lots of countries have coloured money, easier to see what denominations the notes are
not like the plain notes from the states

so why do you expect that we need to be like American money ? or any other country ...?? We are our own country and we can choose whatever we want our currency to look like and who we want to be on our currency

ITs not just canada? Have you travelled extensivly ??
I shouls ask why does america has such odd currecny where every denomination looks exactly the same ?

It has always been that way. Primarily at first to differentiate the denominations of the bills at a quick glance.

Many countries have coloured money, not just Canada. We might ask "Why is the money is the USA all green?"

Different countries do things differently, there is not "right" or "wrong" way, just differences and those are what make life interesting!

I think it its much easier to find a bill you are looking for, because they are different from each other. It would be much more difficult if they were all exactly the same colour.

so drunks dont get confused and hand someone twenty instead of five, best explaination I have come up with and most Americans approve of this idea and think they should do the same. :-) Why is American money green? I think its the only country (that I know of) that has all their money the same colour, most peculiar IMO

The poor girl just asked a question and a lot of you jump on her like she insulted every Canadian alive. It's just a simple question people relax!

As others have said it's been coloured for a long time but now they use it for forgery purposes. It's much harder to photocopy our bills then the $$ from the US.

its easier to use..

for example.. if you see blue, you know its a 5...
instead of having to read the paper and see 5

like.. from far.. if you see something that looks like money.. and its green.. then you know its a 20 :)
but for american... you have to get close to read the little "20$" writing

Harder to counterfeit.

easier to use i guess, like instead of looking at the number on the bill you look at the colour, like if u see a blue u know its a 5 if u see a purple u know its a 10, if its red its a 50... etc

Security...anti-forgery...

Yes it was designed for coloured blind individuals to help tell the bills apart and we also have brail on them for the blind people. Thanks for asking.
