Canadians Can Your Army Defend Your Country Against Any Invading Country? |
1) I ask this as both Russia and the US has refused to recognize Canada's sovereignty in the arctic.
Can your country's army defend the arctic on your own, if not then how can you say your country is independent and sovereign. After all the US may not invade but the Russians might, will your country then ask the US or UK for help, that will then mean your country can't defend herself and is not sovereign or independent if you need someone else to take care of you.
Here is a quote from Stephane Dion:
first and foremost military we cannot win. We cannot win against the Americans, we cannot win against the Russians and . . . we are too civilized to shoot the Danes.
2) How do you feel that a politician in your country openly declares that your country will not be able to win a war to defend your sovereignty and independence. |

Just who is going to invade us??
Sometimes brain is definitely superior to brawn.
Mr. Dion gave away state secrets?? I don't think so.
It is not the size of our army that has ever won the day for us. It's the quality of our people. Ask anyone on the other side of a Canadian in any war we have been a part of. And we most often leave the killing of Canadians to the enemy unlike some armies I have heard of who are always engaging themselves in what they call "friendly fire".
You really ought to study a little about Canadians at war. And remember - quality personnel and Canadian forces are synonymous.
Edit to Dave1452 - When exactly did we go into Iraq?
Are you sure you are a Canadian?
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing and you are proof of the truth of that statement. |

I see no reason for anyone to attack Canada to begin with. They're very peaceful, no? If they were to be attacked, I am sure they can defend themselves rather well. Not to mention the US will definitely help them since Canada and the US have a good relationship. Canada doesn't have anything to fear. |

If they could not defend themselves, then we would have invaded them by now. |

Conversely, Canadians hope that Americans and Russians are too civilized to shoot them. You guys still believe that international violence is the best answer.
EDIT: BTW, the Arctic is extremely important not for its beauty, but for what is underneath it. Some guy is talking about Switzerland being able to defend herself. That's a lot of BS, plain and simple. |

well according to this list they have a small military but im pretty sure Canada has a very good relationship around its border so they shouldn't have anything to fear. |

We all know our country can't defend ourselves against the Americans or Russians. The point is we don't need a huge army. People generally like Canadians and we are respected. Canada has a very strong bond with many countries.
Canadian priorities are different. Why spend huge dollars on military when people like us and respect us. We put that money into healthcare and other projects that look after our own people. No need to waste it on a huge military we don't need.
I agree that we do need some support of a military and we have many fine men and women there to protect us when we need it. Our military also provides education free to people who are willing to commit their time to protecting our country.
All I can say is that I am proud to be part of a country like this who thinks about it's people and helps build a better future. |

I'm sure we can beat Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and maybe the Cayman Islands. Of course not all at the same time, and a war with Jamaica could really go either way |

defend our country against invasion? well perhaps the US or Russia could invade successfully initially but they would never hold it. Canadian citizens, like the Afghanis and the Iraqis would demonstrate a foreign power cannot hold territory against the wishes of the inhabitants. same holds true for Canada.
The US would have an Iraq type situation but right on their border with 33 million people who look like them and talk like them with easy open access for canadian terrorists who might wish to cause some issues in the states. Oh did I mention the US also depends on Canada for most of its foreign oil, natural gas and electricity? It would be the US on its knees fairly shortly.
The russians... well they couldnt even hold afghanistan or the little eastern euro countries.. good luck holding on to Canada.
Canadians will defend Canada to the death. Thats the ultimate defense. |

I am so tired of this question. First, I would like to point out that Stephan Dion is an idiot, so anything ridiculous that flies out of his mouth does not surprise me in the least. Second. Do you really know anything about the Canadian Armed Forces? Or the Canadian people, for that matter? Sure, we may seem laid back and care free, but if someone were to try and take what is ours, or threaten our personal safety, then they would have an entire country up in arms. Even if it meant we go to war with our hunting rifles, shotguns and hockey sticks, we would be there, fighting tooth and nail to protect the rights and freedoms this country was founded on. We would not need to ask another country for help. Our allies, and I am not referring to the US on that one, would be volunteering, as that is the kind of relationship we hold with other nations. This is the True North, Strong and FREE, and every Canadian I know would die to protect that. But it shall not go that far, my friend. We have a well established history of talking things out, rather than shoot first, ask questions later. |

Nobody WOULD invade Canada. |

Very few countries can defend themselves without allies. Switzerland is one of the few because plus it is a small country with a large population and half of it is armed and ready to go. Canada would have to conscript men and women for a long period of their lives and have nuclear weapons if it wanted to be neutral and reasonably safe from invasion.
It's in America's best interest that Canada does not get invaded. They would be screwed if the Chinese took over and turned off the oil. |

There is no way in hell we could successfully defend the arctic without crying to the US for support, let alone the entire god**** country. We could probably hold off whoever is trying to attack us for a little while with fortifying and patrols, but in the longrun, we would be f***ed. Anyway, who the hell in their right mind would want the arctic anyway. Sure, you can say you own the north pole, whoop de doo! But that's about it, I mean I don't know what the big fuss is about. Besides, all of canada's military is pretty much over in Iraq at the moment, and it would take some awful long trips and lots of trips with their staggering 4 recently purchased cargo planes, (can you believe their even jet engine planes? I still can't. We would at least save the embarrasment of saying we had to hitchike back to save our country!) So yeah, to answer your question, no, canada would be screwed 10 feet into the ground if it came to protecting itself from an invasion. |
