Canadians.....Is Canada a nice place to live?

It's a great place to live. Although winters aren't like Texas, the West Coast like Vancouver or Victoria are better than most of Northern US cold wise. Winter is getting more unpredictable, but you can expect a couple of snowfalls over the winter, but not staying months long at a time.

Software development has work available in Vancouver and you should be able to go throw immigration easier than normal based on such a job.

Well I have lived in Canada all my life, which is only almost 16 years but still, I have always loved it. I love having 4 changing seasons. You get used to the Winter, it's actually very beautiful! I live in Southern Ontario and it gets down into the -30's Celcius but hey just don't go out too much on those days and you'll be fine. Winter is a great time to just relax, and read in front of the fireplace. But don't forget we have hot summers too. Today it was already 30+ C. Also I'm sure you'd get a job like that. I actually know quite a few people in that business so it is needed up here. Yes, of course Americans are welcome, nobody would care or let alone even notice you were American, I'm sure. Anyways, good luck with this big decision but lets just say I do recommend Canada.

- I think that you have picked the wrong country to move to, given the reason that you have provided.

For a Texan, anywhere in Canada is going to be cold.

West Coast has a much milder climate.

yeah...if you like the snow. haha, jk. dude, some places in canada, it gets even hotter than in the states. (like where im from) and ALSO, its colder in the states sometimes. CANADA IS NOT COLD.

i live 2 hours north of the us border above north dakota in Winnipeg.
It can get very cold up here up to -40 degrees celsius.

I doubt you would like our politics much. Our Conservatives are about in line with your Democrats on the left/right spectrum. The Conservatives form a minority government now, meaning they can't pass any laws without support from other parties. The other main parties are the Liberals who are further left and the New Democrats who are practically Communists.

Not too sure but I think most of the software developers are located in Quebec and BC.

It will be cold in the winter. The West coast will be the warmest but will probably seem cold to you, I don't think it gets colder than -10C often there. Some other places -15C to -25C would be normal winter temperatures. It could go down past -30C in a cold snap.

Now that you have clarified....

Canada is not a democracy. We just elect our dictators.

We vote for our federal Members of Parliment, provincial representitives, mayors, alderman and school trusties. That's it. Everyone else including judges, sheriffs, senators are apointed, a few positions are people selected by the Queen. And there are almost never any referendums on anything.

You want to move to Canada if Obama gets elected ... so I'm assuming you're a very conservative person? As a liberal California resident who has family in Canada and lived in Canada for a year, I can tell you that most people in Canada are very liberal. As already mentioned by another user, the Canadian Conservative party is comparable to the Democrats, so if you're a very political person, I doubt you would enjoy that fact that most people are liberal in Canada. Of course, not everyone in Canada is liberal, I met a guy from there who was very conservative but most Canadians are liberal.

The weather in winter will certainly be a lot colder than a Texas winter, but the west coast of Canada (Vancouver / Victoria area) has very nice winters. The east coast and the Toronto area usually get a lot of snow. As for jobs, there are a lot of jobs in the Toronto and Vancouver areas for software developers, but Calgary also has a lot of jobs available in that field of work.
