Canadians: What is your general opinion on marijuana?

This is a survey. I am Canadian. Would you please include your age and province? Thanks!

I'm ambivalent. On one hand, several studies have proven that it doesn't have the same psychological dependency like many legal drugs (perscription painkillers) or even alcohol does. I frankly don't see the logic in a society in which alcohol is legal but marijuana isn't. In my opinion, really, if you're going to outlaw one you should probably outlaw both. Similar effects - in regards to impairment. I think that legalizing it and taxing it could be good - it would allow the government to control the product (sometimes weed can get laced with dangerous drugs, which could be prevented by government monopolies on drugs). You'd be taking money out of the pockets of the black-market criminals and, through that and taxation, would be able to get funds for things like the health care system and education and so forth.

Look at the example of Amsterdam and the Netherlands if you will. It's working quite well for them.

British Columbia. 19 years old. Have never smoked pot.

I'm indifferent. I don't smoke, don't care to. Do I care if someone else sits around in their parent's basement smoking it all day? Not really. As long as they are working to support the habit, and not taking it from tax dollars.....

LEGALIZE IT! 20 ontario

Marijuana use is not only illegal, but also not good for your health. It can get you in trouble with the law and result in later problems like not being able to get a scholarship or a job. Marijuana users can become loners or hang out with people who may not be a good influence, which means that if you already have good friends and a supportive family, you can grow apart from them or lose their trust.

I'm old...and I'll just leave it at that.

Ontario.

It's currently illegal, thus anyone using, possessing or selling it should be charged with a crime.

Once it is either decriminalized or made legal, then people should be required to use it responsibly, just like alcohol or prescription drugs.

I'm not a fan of "grey" areas or arbitrary enforcement. The rules should apply to everyone. If something is illegal, then it's illegal for everyone. If it's not, then it's not.

I would not specifically be against decriminalizing/legalizing marijuana. I currently don't like the fact that the profits from sales ultimately go to hardcore criminals (save those small dealers who grow their own).

Myself, I have never tried any illegal drugs, including marijuana. ...Not even in Amsterdam, which I visit frequently, and where it is not illegal to smoke.

What can I say? I'm high on life! (And, to be completely frank, I find drug users to be rather pathetic creatures. I don't personally know anyone who...to the best of my knowledge...uses drugs. Heck, most of my friends and family members don't even drink coffee. We're not puritans or anything. ...Just health conscious, I guess. I drink alcohol maybe 4 times a year...for social reasons. I'm totally okay with that. Alcohol is legal and I consume it responsibly. I imagine it is possible for people to use marijuana responsibly, if it is legalized.)

Edit:

Hmmmm... Everyone (so far) has "thumbs down" and it's just a survey question of people's individual opinions. Gee. Seems like 'someone' has issues.

Everyone I know has tried it, however I avoid those who use it frequently --- I had roommates that smoked joints like cigarettes and it was disgusting to live with them. They had no idea how SLOW it has made them after decades of use (they're in their 30's now) and you can barely carry on a conversation with them. I don't agree with legalizing it; decriminalizing it (first time offenders maybe) would be okay I guess.

I do think that it's a gateway drug; you'd be hard pressed to find someone addicted to coke, crack or heroin who didn't try pot. I'm not saying that you ARE going to try other drugs just because you smoked weed, but I do think that it opens the door to other drugs more easily. I think it's important that we set an example to our kids that drug use is not okay, just like we teach them to drink responsibly.

Having said that, I could care less if my neighbor smokes it every now and then, however I choose not to do it anymore myself. I remember it being fun at first, but then after a few times I just ended up getting sleepy and passing out. Good question though, there should be some interesting answers.
