Canadians: Will Your Country Impress The World For The Winter Olympics 2010? |
Or will it fail to impress the way China did for the recently ended Beijin games. |

Well, considering we did pretty well in Calgary in 1988, (if I DO say so myself) I'm fairly confident you're all going to enjoy it.
I mean c'mon! We don't add potentially harmful substances to milk, have lots of snow, are honest about gymnast's ages and winter sports are pretty much our thing!
We'll even let an ugly kid sing, if it comes down to it! |

China spent something like $45 billion!!! I think our VANOC budget is in the region of $4 billion. Our Olympics might look like a high school track meet compared to that. But then again we didnt bulldoze a quarter of the city, wont shut down factories and ban cars and wont be giving lessons to all vancouverites to "smile, dont spit and pretend to be happy" . We probably wont have lip synching pretty girls or fake fireworks either and our athletes will be over 15 years old
The venues are ready and some in use already so are we prepared... yes.

I think it will impress, but it will be done differently than China did. China has their own style, as does Canada. But there is a lot of hype for our 2010 Olympics. I think we'll do well. |

We'll maintain our hospitality record of being the only host country to let the others win all the gold medals. |

Only people who are interested in winter olympics.
Do I detect sour grapes here ? Because the Chinese won on their own ground ?? |

First, we should be comparing apples to apples. The Winter Olympics in Vancouver should be compared to other recent Winter Olympics such as 2006 (Torino, Italy), 2002 (Salt Lake City, USA) or 1998 (Nagano, Japan). The winter events do not usually have as much of a budget and as much fanfare as the summer events.
Canadians generally have more experience with winter sports (we do spend a lot of time covered in snow!) and so I would expect us to have a good showing in the hockey, downhill skiiing, freestyle skiing, and snowboarding events.
On the other hand, some nations support their athletes financially much more than Canada does, which helps them dedicate their entire time to training for things like the Olympics. Many of Canada's athletes split their time between training and a regular job that helps them pay the bills, since most of them could not live on the money they get from government funds. If they are good and lucky enough, they get corporate sponsorships, which help.
But I would expect our athletes will not disappoint. They will certainly do their best to shine, whether it is just to compete honourably or to go for the podium.
And our success at past Winter Olympics is quite impressive considering the competition. We are a country of 33 million compared to the population of USA, China, and some other countries. And yet we are consistently in the top of the list for medals.
2006 - Torino - 24 medals (3rd)
2002 - Salt Lake City - 17 medals (4th)
1998 - Nagano - 15 medals (5th)
1994 - Lillehammer - 13 medals (tied 5th with USA) |

Oh! Did not know that Canada is hosting the Winter Olympics... but I guess we can't compare it with the Beijing Olympic... As it have more sport than the winter and not as much countries participate it...
Singapore is hosting the YOUTH OLYMPIC in 2010 too... |

No. Vancouver is a crappy city. Literally, almost half the population is made up of Asian immigrants. There thousands of homeless people because the immigrants take up all the jobs. Plus there is gangs. I'm sorry that Vancouver has to represent this country for the 2010 Winter Olympics. But then it may be the best example of the harbinger of Canada's future. |
