Abraxas

Canadians, can you please answer these few questions?

Hi, my name is Mario and I'm a 23 year old Mexican planning on moving to Canada within the year. I have been living in Los Angeles, California for about ten years now, and I think it's time to move on. I'm an English/Literature major with an Associate in Arts Degree in Clinical Psychology and English. I plan on pursuing my Bachelor's and (hopefully) PhD once I settle in Canada, if I do move there. I currently work as an English tutor and as a Computer Lab technician at a community college.

My questions are:

1- Which city would you recommend for me to move to? I am very artistic and creative, love music, the arts, drinks and smoking, literature, and whatever else the bohemian lifestyle offers.

2- Is Canada immigrant friendly?

3- Is Gay Marriage still legal?

Thank you!!!!

Add me on myspace if you like. I'm very friendly and am looking to making Canadian friends.

If you are in LA then Vancouver would be the 'most equivalent' climatewise, but Toronto may be a better fit for all things other.

In Vancouver you have SFU and UBC right at hand, in Toronto you have UofT and York -- so maybe your decision is based on the most suitable academic locale.

Toronto is a bit easier on the smoking, though it is 'not allowed' in bars and restaurants at least you won't have some twerp on a bike screaming at you about their rights.

Canada is immigrant friendly most anywhere, but especially in these two major hubs. In both locations you will easily find strong Hispanic communities and that makes it easier for you to adjust.

And gay marriage is legal in both jurisdictions.

Enjoy!

1. right now there is a HUGE boom in Alberta so any city out there is great for you. For what you are looking for I'd recommend Toronto, it's a little expensive but offers everything you're looking for.

2. VERY much so. Immigrants almost get more than residents. lol (okay not really, but there is PLENTY of help for you) and the citizens of the country treat immigrants like...well no one really cares if you are an immigrant or if you've been here all your life.

3. Yes it is still legal. I don't think that will ever be taken away now. It's kind of a non-issue now. Even people against it have (MOSTLY) just accepted it and moved on to other issues.

You should move in Montréal
Montréal is the culture capital of Canada
lots of arts, lots festivals ( Festival de Jazz, Francofolies. Just for Laugh festival, fireworks...and much more!)
also, Montréal is the place place party in Canada believe me hehe
Montréal is Bilingual, lot of people from all around the world..and Food is good ..
you'll,, find you latin roots in Montréal
the only bad side is..ITS VERY COLD in the winter..and very hot and humid in the summer..but anyway, its a great place

if you are not into that, go in Toronto (mostly for business)
I dont know much about Vancouver, but I heard its a great, peacefull place..with alot of chinese culture)

gay marriage is Legal

EDIT
quebecers just try do protect their language..thats not xenophobic at all!

Toronto sounds like the place for you. It is so diverse and multicultural :) I don't live there, but live about an hour away from there and love visting. There is so much going on there.
Canada I feel is very immigrant friendly . . .we love eveybody :)
And yes gay marriage is still legal up here .

WELCOME TO CANADA. . . soon :)

Here is an official link to the city of Toronto so ou have an idea :)

No doubt about it - looking at your first question
"Which city would you recommend for me to move to? I am very artistic and creative, love music, the arts, drinks and smoking, literature, and whatever else the bohemian lifestyle offers."
- Montreal would be your heaven.

1. Montreal. By far the most cosmopolitan city in Canada. Also features a big mix of cultures (has the largest tri-lingual population in North America). Of all the cities in North America, Montreal is the most like Europe. While you do not need to speak French to live in Montreal (almost everyone who lives there is fluent in both French and English), the Quebec government (Provincial) has language policies for new immigrants.

Toronto is also a good choice. Again a wide mix of world cultures, and all the things you would expect of a city of over 2 million people.

2. Yes, however there are regions that are less so. Quebec can be a bit xenophobic toward immigrants who do not speak French.

3. Yes.

1. The choice of city depends on a number of factors including desired climate and affordability/cost of living, among other factors. Of the three largest cities, Montreal has the lowest cost of living and has great universities. However, the winters can be unbearable, especially coming from So. California. Vancouver has much more bearable winters (with minimal to no snow) but the cost of living there is much higher. Toronto is a fine choice; it's diverse, large and has a lot of cultural opportunities. But, it's also expensive to live there.

Some other smaller cities you might want to consider include Halifax, Victoria (the "warmest" city in Canada temperature wise), and Ottawa.

2. Canada is very friendly towards immigrants. Immigrants with skills are welcomed. You may want to look into the skilled migrant program, which provides permanent residence to those with degrees and work experience: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/index.asp

3. Same-sex marriage is legal in all provinces and territories.

1. Vancouver
2. Oh yes, especially the larger centres. Again, Vancouver is your best bet
3. Yes

Vancouver is very expensive, but worth it for the arts & literature...not to mention scenery. Sorry Easterners, but Toronto has no character, no personality. Just concrete & glass blah-ness.

Canada is of course immigrant friendly :)

Out west right now is in high demand of workers and it is growing widely out there! Lots of new developments going on, as well as jobs!

what does gay marriage have to do with anything?
