Canadians, do you take off your shoes when visiting people?

what if you're not wearing socks?

Yes I do take off my shoes and many people require you to take your shoes off when you enter their house because shoes do bring dirt into the house.Japanese people wore slippers and it’s much easier to just slip those off than to unlace your shoes.Today, many westerners have adopted the custom of asking visitors to remove their shoes.

snowbarbie
Yes, our carpets stay clean this way.

Even if you are not wearing socks, take your shoes off, but wear socks next time!

Baileyy
of course we do... it's rude not to... if you're not wearing socks it's your own fault lol.. unless you're wearing sandals... which is fine... :)

Ooo May Day!
Have manners and take off ur shoes..yes! even if u dont have socks, if it stinks, run to the bathroom adn freshen it with a quick water & soap and wash it off.

Krysia K
I do unless the host insists that i leave them on

Yes I do. Always done it and i expect people to take off their shoes when they come to my place or if they want to wear shoes at least bring clean ones and leave their soiled shoes at the door. At family gatherings such as Christmas Dinner and such people usualy bring shoes to wear inside. There is snow on the ground about 6 months a year it is just rude to bring all the ice, snow and dirt inside someone's home.

If you are not wearing socks (which would be during the 3 months of rather nice weather) you can walk barefoot. We keep our floors clean and also expect your feet to be.

Jason
Yes I always take off my shoes.

Yes we do. I know a lot of my friends from different areas of the States think that's weird.

However, there are parts of the States that take off shoes as well.

In most homes, you remove your shoes/boots at the door, mainly because most times of the year here in Canada, you may track in snow, water, mud, or dirt and that is not very polite to do in someone's home.

Keep in mind that some people will tell you "Oh! Don't take your shoes off, it's fine". But as a matter of courtesy, most people still do.

And I would say that most people who are going out to visit someone at their home will wear socks. I don't think I would ever go to someone else's house without socks.

Unless I knew the other person really well, you would not see me in their house without socks, and for sure not grossing them out by using their bathroom towels and facecloths to wash my feet.

My3Boys
Yes, we do. If we're not wearing socks, then (shocker) we walk around in our bare feet.

Our shoes tend to get quite dirty, considering our range of weather. Shoes get taken off at the door.

Ed P
Yes I allways wear socks

pissy_old_lady
Always take my shoes off...rude if you do not remove them...as for the no sock issue...I do not wear socks and I always remove my shoes....I also carry a pair of slippers with me to wear at others' homes....at my home I would ask shoes to be removed if the people did not do so...my flooring is expensive and the grit from shoes would ruin it.

always. it's rude to keep them on and track dirt through someone's house. plus it's more comfortable.

Imaka
Yes, I always take my shoes off. In many places I have lived it was easy to bring in dirt on your shoes, so it was polite to take shoes off. It is a common thing in most places I have lived, and no one really thinks about it. And most of the time the "no socks" issue would not be a problem because of the weather.

yes! we as canadians who live so far away from the U.S have completly different manurisms and traditions from americans.. oh ya we also dont wear shoes .. we wear snow shoes being that we live in igloos

♥Kazz♥
Isnt that just a Japanese Tradition not to wear your shoes indoors?
