Canadians, how do you keep yourselves comfortably warm during winter?

I am an Asian wanting to migrate to a country that experiences zero degrees Celsius during winter. I am not used to cold weather. I grew up in a country that has a warm weather of 28-30C.
I know that Canada is one of the coldest countries. And i am so curious.....how do you keep yourselves effectively warm during chilly temperatures? How do you also keep yourselves comfortably warm inside your cars when you go to work?

Serious answerers only thanks...........

HEY PEOPLE...... i did not say that Canada is backwards ........NEVER! I just know from word of mouth that from some people i know they mentioned that it is one of the coldest places and i want to adopt how them keep warm coz i have ASTHMA and i want the BEST ADVICE from people who i know who can adopt BEST in that kind of temperature.
FYI the place that i want to migrate to is not Canada but has the similar temp. It is a province and based on my research most houses in that area are not well insulated. The place is a small province from the south of NZ.

booze and lots of it. hot, spicy soups and stews, a furry cat to curl up with when i dont have a good woman in bed, and a space heater. you let your car run for 1/2 hr to warm up, use an interior warmer and wear mitts toque and a parka. again a good woman helps, and we kinda discourage dieting in the winter months. seems a few extra pounds on a wench makes her warmer softer and a little more cushion encourages more pushin' ifin ya know what i mean

It is not as hard as you think. Everywhere you go it will be quite warm inside. Everyone's home and business will be well heated. Cars are all heated - just like air conditioning only hot air instead of cold air. My car has heated seats as well so I can toast my buns on cold mornings. :)

Adequate clothing is key. Dressing in layers so you can take things off as you warm up, having proper outer clothing such as a heavy winter coat that covers down to your thighs, waterproof mittens (warmer than gloves), good warm insulated boots, hat that covers your ears, a scarf for your neck and face when it is really cold, etc. I sometimes wear long underwear when it is especially cold.

Canadians abroad sometimes find it cold in places like England, where winter is cold but not always enough for everywhere to be heated. My best friend is from Flin Flon Manitoba (pretty remote and cold), and has been living in London for about 5 years. She freezes every winter because so many places do not have central heat. Canadians are used to being cozy and warm inside when it is cold outside.

You have to wear warm clothing inside too.... I work with International students at a university, and I see a lot of them complain about their apartments being so cold, yet they aren't wearing long pants, socks or slippers, a long sleeve sweater, etc. You can't expect to be wearing shorts and a camisole in January in Canada and not be cold!

I think winter is great.... but it only lasts a few months. We get 28-30C weather here in the summer, too!

Good luck, and welcome in advance to Canada!

Good question. In the months leading up to winter, we change clothes to include warmer clothing, such as long pants, sweaters, light jackets. In late Autumn, we start to heat our homes. Some have oil heat, others are heated by electric heaters. Some have wood fireplaces, but that isn't usually the main heat source in the home. By Winter, we are wearing our heaviest clothing, using lots of blankets on the bed, and heating our homes all the time (heating bills cost a lot). Many people warm their cars up by starting the car and leaving it for several minutes to warm up before driving. I usually just wear a hat and gloves for the first bit of my drive while the car heats up. We make sure to dress in many layers of clothing to keep warm and we somtimes turn the heat down during the night time to save on heating costs, so that we can have the heat up during the day. Our blankets keep us warm at night.

First off, not ALL of Canada experiences extremely cold weather. Southern British Columbia, Southern Ontario, and parts of the maritimes have relatively mild winters. (Vancouver rarely gets snow, just mostly rain for example)

As for the question, almost every Canadian home has some sort of heating for the winter months. We have electric heating, wood burning stoves, oil furnaces, or natural gas fireplaces that help to keep us warm on cold winter nights.

When we go off to work in the morning, we usually start our cars and turn up the heater for several minutes while we clean off any snow or frost that has collected on the windows. Most people wear a winter coat, hat, mittens or gloves. The key is layers of clothing.

And keep in mind that you get used to the temperature. If you look at residents of Florida, when January rolls around they all get bundled up into fur coats and warm jackets, while all the Canadian tourists are out on the beach enjoying the weather!

Grand pa
We wear warm clothes winter boots cars have good heaters buses & trains heated My wife is a filipina she wears a sweater and socks to bed we also can get electric blankets and heating pads come to vancouver its not bad in winter we have snow today see tourismvancouver hellobc they will mail free guides

There Is a product that came on the market a few years ago,
It's called, Arctic Fleece. It comes In clothing you wear, Bedding for your bed. And believe me, It's got to be the warmest material I've ever worn. God bless the people or Person who Invented Arctic Fleece.
I have two blankets made of Arctic Fleece, And they are not big thick blanket's, Just the regular thickness. On top of that I put a comforter. Now If that don't keep you warm, Then I think you have another problem. (Personally, I wouldn't be without Arctic Fleece anything.) Respectfully. Bob.

k so i live in the part of Canada where in the summer it is around 30 degrees and in winter it is about -45 degrees.

in our house we have central heating and we wear lots of warm sweaters and socks.

in our cars we have to warm up so it works well. we warm our car about 5 - 10 min. before using it.

out side we use warm jackets and boots, scarf, mitts and a toque.

and we run from car to work or where ever you are out side you just run or walk as fast as you can to some where warm.

btw.. winnipeg it cold..
also any sort of alcohol keeps us warm!

we wear warm clothing and have heaters... just like air conditioning for hot weather you have heat for cold weather. right now im wearing fleece pants with a fleece sweater and furry slippers.. their warm. and of course the heat is on in my house.

I'm in Saskatchewan, and there are many Asian immigrants here! Today, for example it's about -35c, but in the summer it can be +35c!!!
In the winter, all buildings have wonderful central heating, and it's not that expensive to keep things warm. One just makes sure your car has a good heater, and you run out into the cold, start it up, come back to the warm house and wait for 10 minutes for it to get toasty in the car before you go back out!
It's all a matter of layering when one does go outside, having the right clothes makes all the difference.

Well I'm from Alberta Canada and this morning it is -45 celcius. It was the same yesterday and I was outside shovelling walks this is what I wore to give you an idea:
T shirt, leggings, wool socks - 1st layer
long sleeved shirt, fleece lined ski pants - 2nd layer
wool sweater, parka with hood, toque (hat), scarf, skidoo boots and mittens completed my ensemble. I actually worked up a sweat while shovelling snow and wasn't cold at all. It's all about layers and having a hat and a good pair of winter boots.
Cars are left running for long periods of time to warm up before people drive them and many people will even leave them running while doing their shopping or eat out. Cars have block heaters which are plugged in when your vehicle has to sit for a number of hours this keeps the engine from freezing up and some people put in car heaters in their cars to keep the interior warm as well.
Hope this helps and good luck with the move.

I'm not from Canada, but I lived in a village in Alaska where the winter temperature was often around -40 (F & C)

The important thing is to get a proper wardrobe. Wear a hat! And a scarf around your face. They make special socks that keep your feet warm. You can also get air-activated heating pads for your hands and feet.

Same as winter weather in Northern China. Think Beijing, Dalian in the winter time. Actually China is colder in the winter, as is Russia, all of Northern Europe and the USA so saying Canada is on the coldest countries is false.

Many places in Canada are relatively warm in the winter. It depends on the weather on any particular year.

Extreme winter temperatures are generally in the far Northern parts of Canada.

You dont say what part of Canada you are thinking of going to and that makes a BIG difference.

It can be -45C in Northern Alberta and at the same time +10C in the interior of BC so you have to be more specific.

im not a canadian but british weather can get really cold too, inside the house is easy because you have central heating and double glazed wondows and all that, but there is no trick, just wrap up warm before you go out, when i walk to work i wear my uniform (blouse, trousers, blazer) underneath that i have a vest and bra, on top i might put on a jumper then a coat then a scarf, i always take gloves and have a hat i my bag just in case.....erm long socks and a lil willpower and your good to go, if anything after the walk i always end up feeling too warm.....

From your inconsiderate answers from the typical Canadians, I think you should re-think migrating to a country that isn't so welcoming.

One should intake Omega 3 Salmon Fish oil capsules daily to keep his body temperature warm enough to fight the cold in a country like Canada or eat pork salami, etc. You can prepare cheese items or use cheddar cheese in your cooking preparation for making food for daily use.

Kevin
Canada is too cold. I have never been there but i dont think many people like the extreme -15/20 temperature.

Dubai will be good for you. It is hot in summer (40-45) but summer is better than winter.
