Crossing The US Border from Canada?

I would like to know if a Canadian Health Card with your birth certificate is enough ID to cross the border

to my knowledge the only picture ID you can use for that is a driver's license or a designated photo id (kind of like a driver's license but for use as a photo id) I used to work in a retail establishment and we were told that legally we could no longer use health cards as photo id and if we did we could be fined.

If you don't have a licence, then a government issued photo id (like OHIP or other prov. health care card) plus birth certificate will be fine. I would suggest getting a passport because soon enough it will be the only way to get across.

Michael M
Your driver's license is probably a better choice to use because it has your address on it. I think the health card has an address on the back. BUT .. as of June 1st, 2009 a passport will be required to cross the border.

I don't know about a Canadian Health Card. When I cross the border in August I had to have my birth certificate and a current picture ID. So if your CHC has your face on it that should do. If not then get a passport. They gave me such a hassle crossing into the US that was the first thing I did when I got home.

Melanie B
going to the US from Canada you need a passport. FYI a health card is not acceptable as ID anywhere
