If you are a US citizen and want to enter Canada that is up to the officer at the time to let you in or not. They can deny you without proof of citizenship.
On the way back you should'nt have any problems if you are US citizen.
If you are a Canadian then you may or may not have a problem, again it depends on the officer at the time. |

You need a copy of your certified birth certificate and a drivers license, you can cross land borders without a passport for another year I think. |

I drove to Vancouver from Seattle and on the way back we only had drivers license and they were cool but still drilled us with 20 questions about the weirdest things that made no sense ! Get a passport and save yourself the hassle |

You might not. They often do accept a vaild driver's license but you should get a passport anyways. Good luck.
I live near the border and I have always been able to get in with a driver's license. However I heard that the laws are going to change within the year requiring a passport. |

My understanding is that you need a government photo identification (eg driver's license) and proof of your American citizenship. I don't think a social security card is good enough.
This website should be a good start: http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/vacation/ |

Possibly depending on the guard but you really need something that proves citizenship or permanent residency such as a birth certificate or a green card.
And despite the misconceptions most U.S. folks are spreading, there are NO plans to require U.S. citizens to present a passport at the Canadian border. Passports will only be required by anyone entering into the U.S., not Canada. |

You can still cross without a passport. You really should have a birth certificate though. |

Don't count on it.
If you are a US citizen:
Currently the law allows US citizens to cross between the US Canada border without a passport, but you are still required to show proof of citizenship if asked, which would be a birth certificate or a passport. You also will need a birth certificate to get a passport, so you will want to contact your state offices to get a replacement birth certificate. It might depend on which crossing you pass through, which immigrations agent you speak to when you cross through, but if you are held up at immigrations, you will not be a happy camper.
If you are not a U.S. citizen, you will need a passport. |

Crossing to or from the USA? The Canadians will probably just ask for your driver's license; the Americans will probably demand to see your car registration also. The Americans will probably ask more questions, too, but the Canadians can be pesty at the major crossings.
As of 2008 the Americans will require you to have a passport. |

For now you may be able to get through although they will ask for a birth certificate if you don't have a passport, but starting in January you will need a passport. |
