Crossing the Canadian Border?

What do you need to cross the canadian border?
Do you only need a picture ID?
Also is it easy or do they hassle you?

Poutine
You need more than just photo ID.
You do not need a passport.

You will, however, need:

1.
Proof of your U.S. citizenship such as your U.S. passport or certified copy of your birth certificate issued by the city, county or state in the U.S. where you were born. If you are a naturalized U.S. citizen and do not have a passport, you should travel with your naturalization certificate.
A driver’s license, voter’s registration card or Social Security card is
NOT valid proof of citizenship.

2.
Photo identification, such as a current, valid driver’s license.

I've done it. No, they do not hassle you, they simply ask, "what are your intentions?".

If you are an American citizen, you will need either a passport, or a state-issued picture ID card (Driver's license) and proof of citizenship (birth certificate).

They will ask you where you are from, where you are going, how long you'll be there, whether you're bringing in anything, both going in and coming back to the US.

My husband and I went on our honeymoon to Niagara Falls and crossed the border about 20 times between our hotel and the sights. Takes a few minutes, but not really too much hassle.

Comfortably Numb
They may hassle you.
Pic ID right now, I believe.
But a passport will be needed soon

Always carry your Passport - to be on the safe side. Canadian Immigration does not hassle you.

great gig in the sky
the Mounties may be there so surrender your gun, you can get a new one later. try to buy your duty free tobacco and liqour, the price is much higher on the Canadian side. so is gasoline. Buy what you can before crossing. To try to fit in ,try to talk about hockey and the Queen and how much you love her. cheer for the Canadiens or the Leafs, but contemplate the Leafs ever winning... hard eh? stick out your tongue and show how orange it is from Kraft dinner. complain about the G.S.T. and the P.S.T. (unless you're from Alberta,(where theres no prov. tax or Eastern Canada wheres it's Harmonized Tax at 1% extra)
Try not to be smuggling oranges, oranges come from Florida, not Canada, it is a dead give-away.
Don't try to speak French, unless you have to.
Try to not panic that the money is colourful (with a "u"!!!) and that the Canadian dollar is not like a peso.
Tim Horton is not the Prime Minister, it's a donut shop, named after a hockey player.
While you're there, have a double double.
Show your ID to the customs people.
unless you are on some American terrorist watch list or a fleeing felon or escapee, they will wave you through. just know that you are subject to inspection on either side of the line.
try not to let the flag that has no blue and no stars scare you.
good luck.

I actually got less hassle crossing into Canada
than I did at U.S. customs when I returned home
