Crossing the border into Canada is like a box of chocolates........you never know what you're going to get. That being said you will have to present photo ID and proof of citizenship. You will be asked where you are going, why you are going, and how long you will stay. You will be asked about bringing food, plants, liquor, cigarettes and weapons into the country. Other than that it just depends what kind of mood the officer is in that day. They can send you on your way or can continue questioning you or even search your car or call you inside for a more fromal questioning or inntensive background check. Please be advised that convicted felons are not permitted to enter Canada at any time>

I went to Canada about two years ago. The border guard asked a few questions and let us go.
Coming back to the USA was more difficult. Long lines and border guards who look at you like you were sneaking a nuclear warhead and a dozen illegal aliens in your trunk.

If you are in a rental car - guaranteed you will be searched and asked TONS of questions.

They will ask you for your required ID and the purpose of your visit. They will also ask you how long you intend to stay, bringing any animals or plants or food with you etc. They may make some small talk, which is to draw you out and see if you are nervous or fidgeting so they think you may be hiding something. Sometimes they ask you to exit your vehicle so they can search it-a small search or complete emptying.

Your ID will be run through a computer to check for any outstanding warrants or reasons for denying entry. A DUI for example is grounds for denying entry to Canada. (and is being a real sticking point in the last few years)

Every car is stopped. Everyone in the car presents photo ID and proof of citizenship. You are asked where you are headed and why, also how long you intend to stay. Randomly cars are pulled to the side and searched.

really all you need is a drivers license, if even that. but they ask why your there and then you leave...unless they have a reason to pull you over.
