Yes only once in history has it ever stopped flowing completely and froze over. On March 29,1848 there was an ice jam in the upper river which blocked the flow of water long enough for people to walk out onto the river bed. It only lasted for a few hours.

Yes indeed, check this out.

The falls never completely froze over but the top layer did with water moving underneath the frozen part. It happened back in the late 70"s I think it was 1978. It would take a real freeze for maybe 10-14 days for it to completely freeze over all the way.

no, but you will see ice flow over the falls in the winter.

No Niagara Falls has never froze and probably will not freeze

Beth
I highly doubt it...Niagara Falls is the most powerful waterfall in North America. It has more than 6 million cubic feet of water falling over the crest line every minute at high flow, and 4 million cubic feet on average. It would take extremely cold temperatures to freeze that amount of water! I hope this helps!
