Did people really care for baseball in Montreal? |

We did care for baseball right up until 1994. That year, the Expos were the best team in all of Major League Baseball. Then the players went on strike and the season came to an abrupt end. People got convinced the players cared more about their greedy selves than their fans.
After that, the owners traded away the best players on the team, leaving us with a B-class team that never rose from the ashes of what it once was. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montreal_Expos
Add to that the money-making scheme of one Jeffrey Loria, to whom MLB offered the Florida Marlins in exchange for the penny he put into the Expos (he refused to sign broadcasting contracts, so the team's games got no airplay whatsoever), and you get total disinterest in the team. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeffrey_Loria
Finally, add MLB's refusal to induct Jacques Doucet, a French-speaking broadcaster who covered the Expos throughout their existence, into the Baseball Hall of Fame, and you get total disinterest in the game itself. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacques_Doucet_(sportscaster)
Besides, Montrealers have got the Canadiens, the Alouettes and the Impact to cheer for. So what if the Expos are now the Washington Nationals. They're still a sorry losing bunch. |

i believe so, because they have posters of the Expos in many restaurants/pubs/bars |

I think the problem with losing the franchise here was due more to the horrible venue (olympic stadium) rather than anything else. The Big "O" as we called it was a horribel piece of crap built on an inhuman scale with alomost no good sightlines and even in the sweltering heat of a july game with the roof open it was cold an uninviting.
That in my opinion was ahuge factor. but of course there are always more layers to the onion, like lack of money a low win season year after year. |

Clearly no.
When you have major league games where only a few hundred fans show up, it's not going to work. It's funny, though, how once the Expos were done, thousands and thousands of people complained, said how they loved going to games, went all the time....uh huh, yet fewer than 1000 would show up to games?? |
