Do Canadians ever pity the enlightened intelligent Americans? |
Canadians would be right to say the average American is either ignorant or stupid, demonstrated by re-electing Bush and knowing nothing about the rest of the world.
However, what about the kids who go to Harvard University, Columbia, Stanford, Princeton, Yale, UC-Berkeley.
What about the folks in Massachusetts who never supported Iraq or Bush, they passed Same-sex Marriage so all lovers can share a small outermost Cape Cod House and live the same as any other couple in love. They have no death penalty in Mass., they have great preservation of folk music and Irish roots. And rich revolutionary history. They have free university-sponsored arthouse concerts and lots of family-run coffee shops and coffee houses.
Out in California you have a group in Berkeley who held a mass demonstration against the US Marine Corp. They have lots of peace groups. Then you have happy environmentalists nature friendly folks along the shores of Oregon and Washington state. You also have some very intelligent progessive thinkers in the USA who attribute to ideas well beyond what you'd ever expect of an American, the newest invention being an automobile powered by air compression.
So my point is there are smart people in America and fascinating cultures that exist within the states that suffer the consquences for idiotic people who put the USA in the dilemma it is in.
How is this fair to then assume the whole America screwed itself? Even if you don't agree with any American group, there's quite a diversity of mindsets within the states, it is way too diverse to be 1 people. Additional Details Also Joni Mitchell is a Canadian who sings about "California." And Steve Geller is a Canadian singer who sings about "Following the river down to a New England Town" :) |

Trying to pigeonhole a nation of 300 million people is a highly dangerous proposition, just like Americans trying stereotype our country is equally silly.
To say a particular group of Americans are to be pitied is a bit silly; in any population there's diversity of opinion.
Americans run the gamut; Americans are fine enough people who, in the main, mean well enough. They love their families and want the same basic things (prosperity, health, etc.) as most societies.
As long as we respect each other (easier said than done but doable nonetheless) we'll get along quite fine. I visit the US frequently for work, and go out of my way to not opine about US affairs while on US soil. I recognise that I'm a guest of your country, and do try to conduct myself accordingly.
I prefer to look at the similarities rather than the differences. It's easier and helps foster positive relationships betweeen neighbours. |

As a Canadian I am often too embarrassed at the stupidity displayed here to be concerned about the USA.The sheeple who reelected the Liberals over and over again when they were constantly and blatantly lying .The people who wouldn't vote Conservative because they had a "Hidden Agenda".What was this agenda, nobody knew because it was, you guessed it, hidden. We have Senators who don't even live in the country making the biggest kind of money and getting insane retirement packages. We have Liberal appointed judges who let repeat gun offenders out on bail or house arrest to kill innocents while Robert Latimer is in jail...don't get me started... |

I moved to Canada to be with my wife and I will tell you that most Canadians are just as ignorant. Don't get me wrong - they know that Americans are stupid and taking their political scene in the wrong direction - but the average Canadian does not know anything beyond that very superficial impression.
They just go along with the conventional wisdom about Americans being stupid - it's mere luck that the wisdom happens to be very correct. But I would never consider them more learned or educated on issues on the American or International scale. You can talk to them about how Bush choked on a pretzel and how that's such an accurate representation of Americans' stupidity, but you could never discuss the deficit, market regulations, foreign policy (beyond using buzzwords like "Bush lied" and "no justified war"), etc, etc.
Furthermore, I challenge your idea that Canadians are somehow a more englightened and intelligent nation. This, I believe, is the true display of American ignorance. How could Americans like you be so ignorant to assume that Canada is such a liberal freethinkers' paradise when you don't know a thing about the place? I'd guess that you can't name a single person in Canadian politics besides the Prime Minister, and maybe one or two other people ONLY IF they happened to have been a guest on an American comedy show like Jon Stewarts' or Bill Maher's. |

yes, of course we pity the so-called enlightened ones.
you answered the question yourself, those poor people have to live with a reputaion of being a dumb country no matter how smart they are. of course its not fair mais c la vie.
I personally don't think all American's are dumb, and I haven't met any that are as dumb as they show on tv. |

point taken, yes I do pity those open-minded progressive, educated Americans, it's too bad that all of that is overshadowed by the wars, crime, pollution, racism, homophobics, religious right nutbars and gun loving rednecks... |

I AGREE but i lived in canada and was constantly being told how United states messed up. Even though i was the one to state that the country is The United States not america they still rode their high horse. They call us ignorant while being ignorant about there assumptions. The United States is way to diverse to group us into even a hundred groups . |
