I only claim to be from Canada when I am in Canada and the rude, obnoxious American tourists are around. Yes, I am an American, but I also understand I am in another country.
Go ahead, give me the thumbs down. I get better treatment from the places I frequent in Montreal than most Americans. I only speak the truth. |

I don't now about that question, I never heard that before.I think Canadians treat people better than Americans treat people. I am sorry to say that. I love America it's one of God greatest country. But American people can be rude to other cultures.
I am speaking from a true American/ Texans.

That's an easy cover to blow.
Ask them about hockey, curling, Ottawa politics, and basic geography such as provinces and territories, and they come up short. |

We do know, and it pisses us off.
Instead of simply claiming to be from Canada, how about behaving the way Canadians do - and then you wouldn't have to resort to a subterfuge. Or sully our reputation. |

Yes , not only Americans, I'm sure all remember a few years back when 2 Israeli Mossad members used our passports for spying? And thanks to that incident, many Canadians are now questioned extensively even if travelling to Europe. |

I once went up to a group of girls with Canadian flags on their backpacks. I had quite recently moved to Switzerland from Canada and was all excited, went up and said "Hey are you from Canada?" They said "um...yeah..." I says "cool! What part?" They says "um, the South."
Not Canadian. |

Yes, and I hate that Americans do this!! That's why I got a Canadian flag tattooed on myself! No American could bring themself to do that.
It's funny that Americans think they're all that, yet pretend to be Canadian when travelling because our country and our people are more well liked. Jerks. |

Yes. The Americans started doing that in the early 1980s when the Iranians started kidnapping Americans and holding them as hostages. |

LOL... with my Texas accent, people would really have a good laugh if I pretended to be Canadian.
No way would I ever do that... and why in the world would I want to. I'm very proud to be an American !!! |

I've heard many, many instances of this, so it is pretty common. Not every American will do this, I suppose for safety sake or so they don't feel they've been mistreated by someone else who may not like Americans they might portray themselves as a Canadian. To me, the ones who will do this just want a peaceful holiday without any ruckus, so I don't mind. The ones who answer hell no, I'm American and damn proud of it, to hell with anyone else... they're the type that we DON'T want pretending to be Canadian. It pretty much looks after itself this way. We get the good ones wanting to be like us, and the obnoxious type do their reputation what it deserves.
To catch an American pretending to be a Canadian, ask him how to spell Saskatchewan and pronounce its capitol properly and without snickering... they just can't do it ;) |

that's funny. i've never heard that. i did notice once when i was in europe that if i told someone i was american (which didn't matter because they usually could tell) they didn't much care, but the second i said i was from tx they got all excited like they just met someone from another planet. that was 10 years ago. so now, i think i'd avoid telling people i was from tx for obvious reasons. guess i'll have to say canada next time. |

hahaha that's pretty funny.
when i go places people automatically think I'm american so I have to say no, its CANADA

Yeah, I've heard that. I've heard that Americans will sew a Canadian flag on their back pack when hitchin' through Europe 'cause it's easier to get a ride that way.
I used to work with a guy (Canadian citizen) who would vacation with friends at all-inclusive resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean every winter. Sometimes they would get too rowdy at night in the bars and clubs and Europeans would get p*****-off , so they would just chant USA - USA - USA and the other people would say "Oh, it's just Americans behaving as they always do." |

They probably know you're American. We don't usually say 'eh' unless someone asks us to demonstrate it.
Don't screw up our good reputation, please. |

indeed they do and we had several ask if we had any more Cdn pins when we were in China. The first thing taxi drivers ask in China is "american?" when you get into their cab, so we decided to say yes once and were told to get out LOL
When we say Canadian they give us thumbs up and always say "Canada good". So we say "China good" :-)
The Americans I ran into over there I am sorry to say were a really bad representation of their country and fellow Americans. But to be fair I met more than few idiot Cdns too
We ran into a young man who was in tears in a market once and he asked if we were Americans, we said no whats the problem ?
He said "will you talk to me?" hell yes, whats wrong?
He said they hate us, they all hate us, they've been so mean to me -- poor guy.
We gave him a Canada pin to wear. He didnt have much of an accent because he was from Seattle |

What Americans are you referring to? I am American and am proud to say so when traveling abroad. I've never had an instance where I was insulted for being from the US. If anything people like to start a conversation and discuss the plight of the country. |

I live in Mombasa, Kenya and the tourisits who come here....we can tell if they are American, or European. The amerians are very proud to be americans and they are very arrogant. I doubt that ANYONE would be ashamed to be American unless you are going to Saudi or Iraq.
and P.S
the only reason that people dont like Americans is because everyone is jealous of them and everyone would migrate to America in an instant. I know Kenyans and Arabs here only pretend to hate Americans. In reality they all envy Americans so dont be ashamed to claim america just dont be so arrogant and stupid |

You know, I think that is playing right into people's hands to do that. I am not ashamed of being an American and would not resort to calling myself a Canadian. |

Ummm, I've never "pretended" to be anything but American, being as I am, on any given day or geographical location I happen to be in at that very moment. That's the most idiotic statement I've ever heard. |
