Honestly, I never had a huge problem with the Americans, generally I think they are nice people...but recently I've noticed how arrogant they are. When Canadians (for example) walk into a store, they are resepctful of what they are seeing, they are gerally excited to be there, and usually greet the owner or cashier. But Americans walk in, and just the way they walk in, they give off this ora that says "I own this store! Everything in here is mine!". I was in Mexico and talking with a store owner and he could tell I was Canadian, and we got into this conversation...and he pointed out easily where people were from, and he could easily decifer who was American and Canadian. It was kind of scary, and my friends and I could do it too! There was one American that I ran into for a while when travelling, and she didn't want to sit by certain people, she made another person move she didn't have to sit by a larger girl, giving her dirty looks...it was really mean...she also came out for a meal and didn't at all feel guilty that she was the only one that didn't pay for it. I guess we are just brought up differently, and we're not as lazy. At this one store, she was going through postcards and decided that she didn't want some that she picked up, so she just stuck them back on the rack, not in their correct places...I guess I would have taken the time to find where they properly go (just like in a card or clothing store), rather then the cashier cleaning up after me. Just little things like that, I've noticed. I still respect them when I meet them, and I just try to think that each person is their own individual and try not to put them in a certain class and judge before I get to know them
By the way, I am from Alberta....and extremely proud to be Canadian!! |

I can not express how sick I am of both Canadians and Americans pretending to be better than the other. Canadians make fun of Americans and their "flag waving" when we are just as "loud" (Remember the Molson Canadian commercials, or perhaps the fact that we are the only country to sneak in an oversized flag to the olympics)
Americans complain about the fact that we are a more socialist country, but at the same time so many can't afford to even see a doctor.
Neither country is better than the other country. Our differences are so few. To say that it's not in a Canadian's nature to hate someone else is an ignorant comment. Canadians are human just like any other people, and they have the propensity to hate just like anyone else.
We are not as noble as we claim to be. So quick we are to speak ill of the US. Because why? Because they are more powerful than us and don't give a rats *** about us most of the time? Is it an inferiority complex that we have?
We share the same culture, we are the same people. The differences between us are negligible. |

If you come visit us, you should be fine. Just don't go bossing ppl around or saying that the US is better than Canada etc. Esp. don't go making fun of our various accents or other things you notice that are different. I think that's the main problem some Americans face when they come here. They kinda walk around like they own the place and do all of the above. Over the years it's built up a strong resentment. But overall, we are a very friendly nation and we regard you as our neighbour. We know there are both good and bad Americans (just like Canadians) even if we encounter a lot of bad ones. We're proud of our country and love showing others its beauty, so we'll welcome anyone who wants to be a gracious guest. And no, I dont' think French Canadians dislike Americans any more than the rest of the country..... unless maybe it's b/c there's a lot of "anti-French" sentiment portrayed in American media. |

Those are just rumors. I live in Canada and believe me 95% of people here like the States. Yes, we poke fun at them alot but we get American shows and obviously Internet pages that poke fun at us to. We're ok with it. Most of us don't like the Bush Administration (me included) but love the place itself. |

I am Canadian and I think Americans are great people !
I've being to the U.S. 7 times and all the people I encountered
were fantastic and more than willing to help you if they could .
I live on a lake in Ontario so I meet alot of Americans coming
up here to fish year round I have yet to meet one I didn't like. I
have lost track of how many Americans I have sat down and
and had a beer with. As for French Canadians I know a few
who go skiing in Vermont every year and they seem to like
Americans. I hope this helps with your question. |

Generally I think Canadians do like Americans. I mean they give us some good tv. There are a few real jerks on this site though who give the rest of the Americans a bad name. |

I think most Canadians hate American politics, and some American mentality (such as when travelling to different countries and demanding that everyone speak English to you). However, we don't hate Americans on a personal level. I have met many Americans that I didn't like, as well as Canadians that I didn't like. On the other hand, I have met some very intelligent and articulate Americans as well.
As far as the French Canadians hating Americans, I think it is an over-generalisation - just like saying that most people hate americans is an over-generalisation. |

My family just returned from an 8 day trip to Ontario and we did not encounter anyone who seemed to hate Americans. It's a beautiful country with friendly people.
My husband's father is Canadian and they do make comments about French Canadians... |

Actually, it is the view of alot of Canadians that people from Quebec hate the rest of Canada and the rest of Canada hate the people from Quebec. What we may not like about Americans is the American "patriotism" (flag waving, fearing god, fighting with every country you can't control, thinking you're all better than the rest of the world). I know not every American thinks that way, but it is the way American's are perceived. I don't think we "hate" anybody. It's not in our nature really. |

well... my step-dad is from Montreal - in fact, he played for the Montreal Canadiens hockey team when he was young... and obviously, he likes Americans - he married my mom! I think he's kind of fond of me and my daughter, and although his children are half American, he's pretty nice to them and their kids too! :) I don't think you can generalize so easily - no matter what country/culture/race/religion you're talking about, there are exceptions to the rule! |

These generalizations drive me nuts. French Canadians from Montreal and Quebec, and from Manitoba and British Columbia, regard Americans the same as any other Canadians do. They are people. We like some, we don't like others, but it's on an individual basis. Come with an open mind, learn a bit about our country, and see for yourself. |

i am from the U.S. but on a vacation in canada right now and it seems like they are okay with americans but they are all about being canadian, if you tell them: " canadians are alot like americans" they get upset and like to be their own people, not just another country above the U.S.A. i am not in montreal or quebec now i am in the far west of canada so i wouldnt really know how the french-canadians feel. |

Canadians don't usually just hate individuals because they are from a certain place but we certainly don't like the American government for trying to drag us into illegal wars and then punishing us for not going. I think most people do get annoyed with the way many Americans are so ignorant about Canada and act so arrogant about a country that really isn't that great on a global perspective. I travel a lot and I can't believe the way some Americans act when they are in other countries. They jsut parade their ignorance and try and tell everyone who will listen what is better in america. If it is so great then don't bother those of us who know better.
French Canadians don't have a particular dislike for Americans in general. but the fact that you know that Quebec and Montreal are French speaking means that you have taken time to learn something about Canada so I like you already. |

I love quintessence19's answer. You are so correct. Canadians seem to have an inferiority complex towards Americans, but why the competition? I never understood it myself. I've met Canadians who were "flag wavers" and I don't associate with those type of Americans at home. I've also met Canadians that were not. Generalizing is very harmful and is not realistic. We are very similar but Canadians TRY to be different, which they're not.
Since I'm American, I can't truly answer this question but I know I'm liked wherever I've travelled. |
