Depends where in Canada you are.
Like in Ontario not many people say it a lot but if you go to like the maritimes they say it a lot.
I guess we say it without really noticing most the time though... |

I am in south eastern Ontario eh, and we say it a lot...depends where you are in the country eh. |

I say it fairly often.
It's kind of our way of saying 'isn't it?'
Nice weather today, eh?
I know, eh? |

Canadians say "eh" more than Americans, which is why some Americans notice it. (Americans tend to say "huh" rather than "eh"). Canadians don't say "eh" more often than, say, Brits or Australians. |

I'm a Maritimer who now lives in Ontario. Honestly, I hear it more up here than I ever did out east. It's not a frequent occurrence though. |

Well you see, people pick up habits of speech from the people around them that they talk to all the time. That's why in some areas of Canada, almost no one says eh, ever, but in other areas people say it all the time! So not all Canadians are alike, but some of us eh, really like to say eh, eh? |

"Hi"..... I suppose it's just we are polite and really don't wish to offend.
When we make a statement like "Nice day eh?"...we give you a chance to respond, and tell us if you agree !
Without that little "eh" at the end one could presume that the weather on that day is our "considered opinion" and without it we are making a statement without the option for rebuttal on your part .
The little "eh" also enables the initial start of the conversation to continue....and indicates it's your turn to answer. Once the conversation is in full swing the use of the "eh" disappears !
The "Great White North" ( Doug and Bob Mckenzie) a Canadian comedy brought humorous attention to our little "eh" and with the advent of today's communications our little "eh" went round the world...again ! *lol*
It also denotes rather clearly that we are Canadian and in some situations that's a good thing. *L*
But it's primary use is politeness and to reassure that we are just friendly , it's like a friendly poke in the ribs but done verbally.
Personally I do use it from time to time but then I was born in Canada and how could you not use it....it has this sneaky little tendancy to kind of slip out every once in a while ! *lol*
Hope that helps ya ( not going to say it ) ! *S* (Michael C) |

I am a Canadian living legally in LA. I never say it and I know no one from Canada who says it. Actually, I hear more Americans say it than I have ever heard western Canadians say it. |

I think it really does depend on where you are. BUT, because that is supposed to be a Canadian thing, I do know people who will purposely add it in to their speech. Personally, where I live and have lived (Ottawa, Toronto, London) it is in speech every so often. But some people don't say it at all and others add it in, specifically. I think it is much more hyped up than what is regular occurrence.
And in almost every place it occurs in speech (that I have noticed) it has been at the end of a question.
Also, my sister says "I know, eh!" as an agreement as other people (girls mainly) say "I know!" |

'Eh' in Canada is like the Canadian equivalent of 'mate' in Australia.
It's not said as often as people think, but it is still common. It is said mostly in friendly contexts, and is used more often among guys than girls. |

It's one of those myths that keeps popping up. Canadians don't really say 'eh' very much at all - but there is a joke that the name of the country is C eh? N eh? D eh? |
