Do Canadians think I'm nuts wearing a face mask in -5 degrees? |
How cold is it usually before Canadians wear face mask and mittens.
Call me nuts, but I will wear a face mask if there's a windchill and it is any colder than 0. This is not because I can't take cold. In a challenge for who can take cold, I can last pretty long. But I have 0 control over catching a cold 3 days later.
IF the game is who can take cold the longest without catching a cold, that's like rolling the dice, is it not? Additional Details To make a statement, can I wear a face mask in 30 Degrees ABOVE 0 Celsius? Like in July in Ottawa? |

If you're used to it, you don't get a cold often. It was sometimes in the -40's in my town in the last few weeks and I still don't own a face mask. I might put on a hood, and if I'm having to drive a vehicle that hasn't spent time warming up, I will also wear gloves until the steering wheel isn't so cold, but I don't get colds often cuz I'm used to it. |

I grew up in Thunder Bay, ON and Edmonton, AB both freezing places in the winter...I never wore a face mask even in -50 weather. I guess I am just used to it. I did wear a hat and mittens tho |

Is that -5F or -5C?
When it goes below zero, I pretty much start wearing winter gloves, as I never know when I might have to scrape snow off the car window, or if I trip and fall I want to protect the hands from sharp chunks of ice and snow.
The hat, toque, or hoodie comes out when you get that wind chill factor that makes you want to take a knife and cut off your ears because they are so cold.
But it is rare that I wear a face mask. I've used a scarf once or twice, especially when downhill skiing or snowblowing, but not much anytime else.
But everyone is different. I am almost always excessively hot and think nothing of running out for a few minutes in freezing temperatures with only a T-shirt to put out the garbage or recycling. I am almost useless when you get me in 85-90F summer weather, as I am sweating, tired, and have no energy.
By the way, you do know there is no statistical evidence that going out in cold weather will give you a cold or the flu, right? They are caused by viruses and the only reason why you may associate them with running out in the cold is because rapid changes in your body temperature may lower your immune system slightly and make you more susceptible to catching the virus.
You can reduce this chance by washing your hands often, and periodically cleaning things like doorknobs, TV remotes, and the telephone handset. Especially when someone in your house, at work, or at school is known to have had the flu or a cold. |

I ride my bike most everywhere I go, so when I'm riding that I'll put on a facemask just cause it's a damn of a lot colder riding on that bike than just walking around. Other than that I don't think I've ever used a facemask cept for when I go skiing of course, in which case I use the same facemask. |

Wear the mask whenever you need to--Just remember to take it off if entering a bank -(They get a little nervous about those things) |

I think you should wear what you like. However, by "over doing' the winter gear you'll never learn how to tolerate it. Also cold weather doesn't equate catching a cold/illness. |

All I wear in -30 weather is a jacket, normal pants, normal socks and shoes, maybe a hat and gloves. |

Guess it depends where you are. We got your dry cold which you're not supposed to feel and we got your damp cold which they say you feel. Honestly I think they're both old wives tales. If you are comfortable wearing a mask when it's cold to you, do so.
I think the celsius- farenheit conversions are giving you some problems
example 16 degrees plus centigrade is 61degrees farenheit. Plus 30 celsius would be unbearably hot, Not face mask weather |

You can wear a face mask any time you choose. Canadians don't have a specific temperature point at which they all don face masks, nor a higher point at which they all take them off. It's very much an individual thing - and in fact, most Canadians don't wear face masks. When it gets that cold, they stay indoors. |

Um well that is kind of weird. Most people here don't wear a face mask until it gets to about -25C or below. Well unless you are a child then that is fine.
Did you know that you can't catch a cold from being outside in the cold? The reason why you are more likely to catch one in cold weather is because the germs can travel faster in cold are and you are more prone to contact with them. |

It can be -30 and I still don't wear toques or gloves. I only wear boots when I have to shovel. |
