I'm from Windsor, On. Yes to "high school"; "freshman" I think is more an American term. I think we would say, "I'm in my first year" or, if it's high school, "I'm in Grade 9 "(not 9th Grade...that's American as well...lol) something like that rather than freshman. I never hear that term here.
Yes to the term "semester" as well. |

Freshman is American, but the others are used in Canada. |

freshman no, highschool yes. Although most people would know what freshman means (along with sophomore, jr, sr) a Canadian would not use that term and it would be a good giveaway that probably you are from the US. |

High school is very common.
Freshman is not so common. Mostly people who use that word want to impress someone or are fairly interested in American culture.
In university Canadians usually just say 1st year, 2nd year, etc.
We also say Grade 5, for example instead of 5th Grade for Grades K-12.
I still have no idea what a sophomore is.
Yes, people say semester. Sometimes term. |

Yes, Canadians say "high school." In most provinces, that's actually what they're called (e.g., Western Canada High School in Calgary, Quebec High School in Quebec City). "Semester" is also used, sometimes interchangeably with "term."
"Freshman" is very rarely heard in Canada, either at the high school or university level. Usually, you would say "1st year" or simply "Grade 9" (and not "9th grade"). In university, you would say simply "1st year." (Rarely, the term "frosh" is used to describe a 1st year university student.) |
