Do Canadians want Harper, but not with a majority govt?

How does the Canadian media draw this conclusion? Aren't the people who voted for Harper not the same people who voted for the other parties?

Also, how many MPs does each voter get to choose from? Are there other questions thrown onto the ballot for polling purposes? What are they typically?

So which conclusion is more correct?

1) Some Canadians voted for Stephen Harper's party, while others voted for No Harper. The end result was Harper won by a narrow margin.

2) Individual Canadians have decided they like Stephen Harper, but only under the condition of a minority government.

As tiresome as this process may be of extra elections, I think the system is better as it is now than if changed. Having a direct vote for Prime Minister doesn't do anything to ease the pressure of opposition parties, it makes it worse.

Limiting the number of new elections like timeouts in football or basketball has 3 timeouts per quarter would just bear the risk of potential tyranny. Canada must bear with the system.

The US does have presidential elections, and as you can see the last 2 years have been very idle because the Congress and President are in complete disagreement on everything.

On the other hand, a do-nothing govt is sometimes better than one that makes poor decisions.

What we have is a political optical illusion.
40% of Canadians were so unimpressed with the choices they did not even bother to waste their gas getting out to vote. Of those that did vote, more voted against him than for him.

I think parties should represent the views of Canadians across the country and on all issues, not just a single issue. The more parties, the more fractured the outcome. Environmental issues should be the concern of everyone and all parties should have a policy on it. Should we really need an entire party to address a single issue? Apparently so since none of the three major parties seem to take it seriously except and only when they can make hay with it themselves - so far only the Provincial governments have ventured there occasionally. So now we have a specialty party. Makes no logical sense but then logic is not a pre-requisite to Federal Politics in this country and apparently not in yours either.

Policy - gee did any of them offer us a policy this time? They were too busy playing at being Yanks and badmouthing each other to even bother putting together a useful policy. I think they are all disgusting!

I don't like Harper, but he's a better leader than Dion would have been.

I mean, let's face it, Dion's stupid carbon tax is what did him in, and I'm glad Canadians didn't fall for it.

And Jack Layton is a non-factor. Period.

There are are 308 seats in the Canadian Parliament. The Prime Minister is the leader of the Party that wins the most seats. However if that Party does not win at least 155 seats then they have to form whats called a Minority Government. This means that what ever Legislation they introduce must win the approval of another Party that has enough seats, that when combined with the Governing Party's, is enough to pass it in the house of Commons.
If all the opposition Party's disagree with a policy of the Minority Governments, Then combined they have enough votes to bring down the Government and force a new election.
There are as many as 5 or 6 different partys to chose from in some seats Ridings. However in this election for the most part it came down to Conservitive, Liberal, New Democrates and the Green Party. and Quebec had the Bloc in addition to the four I just mentioned.

say what you will about the canadian election system it does tend to produce almost exactly what the people who care are feeling one way or the other. I think most thinking canadians wanted to retain harper as the best PM but keep him on short leash so he doesnt start trying to open the old war wounds of abortion ,gay marriage and death penalty and unity. Its exactly what we got.
I dont think liberals or bloc will topple them anytime soon unless as I say he starts trying to implement an extreme right wing agenda.

I dont understand why when Dion talked about "THE LIE" he didnt bring it up that Harper knew if he waited to next year the economy would tank and they'd be tossed. Its why he broke his very own law HE LIED on fixed election dates and it blew up in his face....
The Liberals did a very crappy job of explaining the carbon tax concept but something like it has to be brought in especially if we want to trade with EU

That doesn't make sense. Canadians didn't get together and form some collective mind blob to decide who would vote for whom to make sure Harper got in with a minority government. We voted for who we wanted to win, and we did not agree.

Well, with a minority, Harper really cannot change all that much without being vetoed, so we are in for another term of him sitting with his thumb up his ****. I feel Harper is an dolt, but he is the lesser of the two evils, as Dion.....well, I don't even have the words to describe what I think of Dion. While I voted for NDP, as I would prefer to have them in my area, I would not like to see them in complete control of the entire country. I gave them my vote, in hopes it would upset the total votes enough so neither Liberal or Conservative would get a majority. So I would have to conclude that both 1) and 2) are correct, and equally so. IMO, of course.

It's Quebec that does not want him with a majority. Unless they give the West a buch more seats to reflect popuklation growth we won't be seeing a majority government any time soon.
