If you're driving, you do not need a passport (until this summer). But you do need a government issued picture ID like your driver's license and your birth certificate. If you're flying, you need a passport.

Karen L
No passport needed if you're driving, just proof of citizenship and photo ID like a driver's licence, until June 2009 when you'll need a passport for that. You need one now if you're flying. I'm assuming you're an American. It's actually the US which requires the passport for you to enter by air when you return, so the airlines won't let you on a flight to Canada without one.

I cross all the time... you need a birth certificate and government issued photo id. Being in the military means nothing to them. In june or july you will need a passport.

yes, you do need a passport, even if you're retired military. You need it to cross the border
