no that only applies to flying but you have to show that you have a passport or have applied for one. It does not extend to driving across the border.

Livin' His Way
I believe that you will need one, but dont quote me. Especially with how everything is in the world right now. You could always call a gov't agency or call the Can. or US border patrol and see what they say.

I live in Michigan, I go to Canada all the time. You only need your ID but bring a birth certificate just in case.

ENTRY/EXIT REQUIREMENTS: All persons entering Canada by air are required to present a valid U.S. Passport when entering or re-entering the United States. Land and sea travelers are also encouraged to have a valid U.S. passport. If THEY DO NOT have a passport, they should be prepared to provide a government-issued photo ID (e.g. Driver's License) and proof of U.S. citizenship such as a U.S. birth or naturalization certificate..

IMPORTANT NEW INFORMATION: As early as January 1, 2008, U.S. citizens traveling between the United States and Canada by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid U.S. passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. American citizens can visit travel.state.gov or call 1-877-4USA-PPT (1-877-487-2778) for information on applying for a passport.

Hope that helps you.

You'll have to wait for your passport.

?
No you absolutely do not. The security laws that are in place have been temporarily suspended for the summer on travel to Canada, Mexico and the Bahamas. This was done just the other dasy because they are so backlogged with passport requests. Take your bus trip and enjoy.

little78lucky
a new law just went into affect that you can go canada and a few other places while waiting for your passport you just have to show the papers that you have applied for your passport

So far, up to this point, passport is only required on AIR (not land and Cruise) - so, if you plan to drive or take the bus, just show your valid photo ID and birth certificate to cross the border.

I myself recommend that you should have passport in hand just in case you get injure or something happen during your trip and they really need to fly you back to USA...

Have fun!
