Passport requirements have been changed lately. They were requiring passports if flying from US to Canada but due to heavy volume, some changes have taken effect. See the following site for further information.

Bon voyage!!

The other answers are really good, and offer complete information. However, I would add that the information is based on the assumption that you are a US citizen. There will be different rules for foreign nationals from countries other than the USA.

If a citizen of US, Canada, or Mexico and entering US (which measn entering Mexico or Canada as well, if trip originated in the US):
- - traveling by air after 01 January 2007 will require a valid passport
- - traveling by land or sea before 31 December 2007 will require proof of citizenship (which may be valid passport, brith certificate, and/or naturalization papers) AND photo ID (which may be valid passport, valid US or Canadian driver's license, or military ID)
- - traveling by any means after 01 January 2008 will require a valid passport

If not a citizen of US, Canada, or Mexico, a valid passport is required regardless of means of transportation.

If you drive you do not need a passport until january 2008, if you fly you already need one or atleast conformation that your passport is being processed, secondly, it's not so much that you need a passport to go to montreal it's more that you need a passport to get back into the states

If you fly, yes.

If you drive, take the bus, or train, you will need two pieces of ID, preferably with your photo on them.

Depends if your flying. I believe you need a passport if you fly but not if you drive up.
