None of the previous answers gives the necessary details! If you are an American citizen, you Do need passport to enter Canada by AIR. You do NOT need a passport to enter Canada by LAND yet. The requirement for passports to enter by LAND will begin sometime between Jan. 2008 and June 2009. The exact date has not yet been announced. That is why you see different dates on different websites...they are speculating. See website below. |

are you from the US? if you are, than no, you don't need a passport to get into CAnada yet. the law that was supposed to go into effect earlier this year got pushed back until January 2008 because the government is incredibly backed up on passports. if you're going in 2008, i would apply for a passport now, so that there is plenty of time to get it. |

If you are a citizen of the United States, you do not need a passport to enter Canada; however, you should carry proof of your citizenship such as a birth certificate, certificate of citizenship or naturalization or a Certificate of Indian Status, as well as a photo ID. If you are a permanent resident of the United States, you must bring your permanent resident card (i.e. green card) with you. These days...yes, you do.
They gave a reprieve for a while, but beginning Oct. 1st, anyone traveling to any country outside of the United States is required to have a passport. |
