Someone provided you with a great link to the information. Too bad they didn't read it. The passport requirements have been delayed several times. Next summer they plan to require passports.

Americans/Canadians do not need a passport to drive across the border this year. But they did upgrade it so that if you don't have one you need a birth certificate AND drivers license.

So make sure you all have both. My only experience with out of the way boarder crossings this time of year is customs have more summer college kids working with too much time on their hands and will interrogate you even more. I drive across the boarder several times a year, and only had a full search of the car once, and it was at such a crossing. Also, that crossing is a day crossing, not 24 hours.

You do not need a passport to drive across the Canadian border. You need government ID (driver's license) and proof of citizenship (birth certificate).

It depends when you are going. Check the internet to find out if the law is in affect yet. If it isn't, it most likely will be soon.

Before, to enter Canada from the US you only had to show proof of US citizenship, now its changed and you have to have a valid passport to Canada and to re-enter the United States.

So sorry, I guess I didn't read you post good enough. Its only if you are flying to Canada that you need your passport. Sorry for giving the wrong info.
