Not until January 1st, 2008. Right now, all you or anyone else will need is their birth certificate. I am applying for my passport right now, along with my kids, so that by the time 1/1/08 is here we will be set.

Macaw_Lover
Starting Jan. 2007 it is required for those of all ages to have a valid passport for air travel to Canada, Mexico & Caribbean. Starting Jan 2008 it will be required to also have one for drive in vacations.

Passports are on about a 4 month wait for some, so I would apply soon.

Explorer
If you are flying, yes.
If you are driving, 2 pieces of government issued ID

adding info to macaw_lover's answer: if travel is by air - all ages require a valid passport - however - due to the huge backlog, and this is only temporary, you can show a receipt that you have applied for a passport along WITH a photo ID (not required for young children) AND original/certified birth certificate and that is acceptabe to re-enter the US. If you are crossing by land or ship, a passport will not be required until next year.

Hi cinny,

we traveled by train from Windsor to Toronto. (4 hours)
we were required to provide original birth certificate when entering customs, but not at any point afterward.

If you travel by air you will need a passport.
