Yes you do need a valid passport :) |

Under the Patriot Act, now all persons flying to and from the United States must have a passport. This has been in effect for about a year; during that time it was possible to walk or drive across the borders without a passport, but that too has now ended and you MUST have a passport if you plan to step foot outside the country - by whatever means. |

As of January 2007 it is a requirement for re entry into the US from Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean that you have a valid passport.
If you are coming into the US via train, ship or vehicle you will need a birth certificate and a photo ID. This will change in 2008 where a passport will be required for those over 15. If you have children under 15 a birth certificate is allowed, but if travelling w/o spouse a Power Of Attorney will be required to show that you are legally crossing the border. |

Effective 01 January 2007, ANY citizen entering the US by air must have a valid passport.
If a citizen of Canada, US, or Mexico AND traveling by land or sea (to enter the US) before 31 December 2007, you require proof of citizenship (which may be passport, birth certificate, and/or naturalization papers) AND a photo ID (which may be passport, US or Canada driver's licence, or military ID).
If traveling after 01 January 2008 and entering the US by any means of transportation, you require a valid passport.
Note: Due to processing delays, the implementation of the 01 Jan 2008 requirement for passports (for US citizens) has been delayed to June 2008. However, you would still require the passport to enter either Canada or Mexico, effective January 1 (because Canada and Mexico citizens are required to have passports to enter the US, even though US citizens are not). |
