You will be driving to Montreal, I would assume?
If traveling by land from the U.S., you will only need a picture I.D. and also some government issued I.D. such as a proof of citizenship, for example.
If you were flying into Montreal from the U.S, you would need a valid passport though.
Laws and requirements, as far as border crossings are concerned, are gradually changing I guess, thanks to 911!

Passports are mandatory if you FLY between the U.S. anf Canada. If you travel by LAND, you will need a hoto I.D. AND proof of citizenship...a passport OR birth certificate. See site below and read top half of page carefully for current info. Date for needing passports for land travel has not yet been set but is likely to be sumer 2009. You cannot use JUST a photo, I.D....you must also have the proof of citizenship. |

If you are coming from Vermont and going to Montreal, my guess is that you will be driving up I-89 or I-91, and then taking Autoroute 10 all the way into Montreal.
Since you are arriving by LAND in my scenario, there is not currently a need for a passport. Americans can still show just a valid government issued photo ID.
What Canada Customs wants to see is your nationality and your present address. A Vermont driver's license and your birth certificate should be good enough for that.
Keep in mind that passports or some other card (such as a NEXUS card) will slowly but surely become mandatory over the next year. The last time I checked the websites, they mentioned that the deadline for requiring passports by LAND or SEA had been pushed back to June 2008. There was also some talk of making an exception for senior citizens and children under 12, but don't know what was finally agreed upon. |

It depends how you intend to get there. There is an agreement between Canada and the US that if you are driving across the border you only need a valid photo id. If you are flying you will need a passport.
Check the immigration Canada website to make sure. www.cic.gc.ca |

You used to be able to just have a driver's license and birth certificate to drive across the boarder, but I believe they either just started started to insist you have a passport or will in the near future.
I'd recommend getting a passport just to be safe anyway. It's a bit expensive, but then you don't have to worry about it for ten years. |

You do now. New rule. Not so much to get into Canada, but to get back into the States you will, because Canadians now need a valid passport to go to the US, which we never did before. |
