Do I need a passport to get from the USA into Montreal and back if I am only staying 4 days?
You need a passport to travel regardless where you are travellin (i mean to another country). Now if you are talking about a visa, if your are a US citizen, you need to show your passport and ticket at the airport. You can double check at the US embassy website. They have a list of requirements to follow depending on your present citizenship status.

My husband is canadian and we went to visit family in canada last fall. I didnt know that since 9/11 there must be some documentation of your country of citizenship to get back into the US. Going To Canada you need nothing. Coming back into the US you need a copy of a bith cert, or passport,or something that says you are American born or a citizen of the US. I had a friend fax me copy of my bith cert up to Canada to get back into the US.
Pre-9/11 all you needed was a driver's license to cross the border. We flew into a town near the border and drove over the border. I do not know if it would be different if you flew straight into Canada.

Yes.. you should have a passport to go to Montreal(not a birth certificate).. You can go to the post office and order one.. I think the cost is $35 for 10 years or so.. not that expensive

You don't need a passport at the moment to travel between the USA & Canada.

If you are American, you can get by without I believe. However, if you are somebody else, you may have big problems reentering the US.
