Do I need a passport to go from the US to Canada?

I was wondering if a passport was required to go from the US to Canada. Since we are both countries that get along, do I need one to cross the border?

I am Canadian and live within 20 minutes of the Canada/US border and cross frequently. If you are driving into the US, as a US citizen, you will need 2 pieces of ID, at least one having a photo. YOU DO NOT NEED A PASSPORT! Driver's Licence and Birth Certificate are great. However, starting in 2008 (and there is still confusion on exactly when), you WILL need a US Passport - not to get into Canada, but to get back into the US. This will be a Homeland Security requirement. The legislation in the Congress is still pending.
As of Jan 1, 2007, you DO need a passport if you FLYING back into the U.S.

Going into Canada you won't. Going back to the USA you will. Your government is initiating this as part of its anti-terrorism operation.

Yes you do need a passport. We now need a passport to travel from Canada to the US.

Yes. As of January, 2007, all US citizens are required to carry and present a valid passport upon leaving and entering the US. This includes going to Mexico and Canada.

Passport applications are available at any US Post Office, and many township offices throughout the country. You will need 2 small passport sized photos of your uncovered head and face. Some Post Offices can take them for you on site.

The cost for a passport has increased. Expect to spend about $100 for a new passport, less if you are renewing, and more if you need expedited service. Normal delivery is 6 weeks.

By air, you require a passport to enter and re-enter the USA effective January 23, 2007.

By land and sea you will require a passport as of January 2008, at the earliest to enter/re-enter USA.

To come to Canada everything is as normal for now. The Western Hemisphere Travel Inititive is an American based law which is why it is only to enter and re-enter that country.

Our countries do get along, but sadly there will be people that try and take advantage of that situtation on order to harm our populations.
