If you are flying, yes.

If you are driving, no, but you will need government ID (driver's license) and proof of citizenship (birth certificate).

This will change next summer.

Are you driving or flying? If you drive, and you're crossing the border before Jan 1, you don't need a passport, just picture ID. If you fly you need a passport.

My family travels to and from Canada, past couple year you just needed a simple form of ID. since January 2008 the boarder patrol where we cross say that we need our passports going into Canada and returning back to the US.

Yes you do. You won't be able to embark if you don' t have your passport. Although Canada is considered a friendly nation, you are required to have your passport when traveling from the States into any city in Canada. For more information, log on to https://www.travisa.com/partnerone/default.htm?partnername=
It will tell you all the requirements involved in travel.
