Nope, just photo ID (and a birth certificate doesn't hurt) if you're American.
* December 31, 2006 – Passport required for all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
* December 31, 2007 – Passport required for all land border crossings, as well as air and sea travel. |

I have friends in Canada and everytime I've gone (by air and by car) I've only used a birth certificate and driver's license. Of course, that's if you are a U.S. citizen. Anyone not a U.S. citizen will need a passport and/or visa. |

Yes! That is a definite, they made that rule for this year that you have to have a passport to travel to and from Canada/USA. You'd better apply for it a.s.a.p cause it can take awhile! Last year when I went they got real mad cause I only had an I.D. I go there often and last time they said that this year you'll need a passport to get across the border! |

I am planning a trip to Canada in September. You do not need a passport; however, they do recommend you to carry a certified birth certificate and a pictured ID.
I am looking forward to my trip and I hope you enjoy your trip as well. |

According to the US State Department, you do not need a passport to travel to Canada until Dec 31, 2006 (air/sea) or Dec 31, 2007 (land).
However, it may be wise to get a passport anyway. If your name on your photo ID matches your name on your birth certificate, then you're fine. But if it doesn't, it might be better to get the passport for peace of mind. It is a valuable document to prove identity and citizenship, where your birth certificate and photo ID may leave room for questions.
And, because of how long it takes to get a passport when your ID and birth certificate do not match, the sooner you can do this, the better. Even if you're not going out of the country anytime soon, it may be a good idea to get a passport. If I had gotten mine before I changed my name, it would have been a simple matter to change the name on my passport. As it was, it took six months to get it, and the stupid document arrived at 5pm, when I was scheduled to leave home to begin my trip at 6pm. Cutting it just a little close, there.
So, if you can get a passport, get it, even if you don't need it. It's a valuable bit of paper. |

not really, I used to go to Canada all the time without one. Take a driver's license and if you're really not comfortable a birth certificate, but that's not even necessary. I know that in Mexico, especially if you're flying in, that it's much easier to have one, but Canada isn't really a big deal. |

If you are an American citizen you do NOT need a passport to enter Canada (driving, flying, boat it does not matter).
It MIGHT change in the future but there are no laws in either country yet.
You will, however, need:
1.
Proof of your U.S. citizenship such as your U.S. passport (For information on obtaining a U.S. passport, check with one of the regional passport agencies located throughout the U.S.) or certified copy of your birth certificate issued by the city, county or state in the U.S. where you were born. If you are a naturalized U.S. citizen and do not have a passport, you should travel with your naturalization certificate. A driver’s license, voter’s registration card or Social Security card is NOT valid proof of citizenship.
2.
Photo identification, such as a current, valid driver’s license. |

In April 2005, the United States Government announced the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) requiring all visitors to and from the Americas, including Canadian citizens, to present a passport to enter or re-enter the United States by December 31, 2007.
The WHTI will be implemented in two phases, as follows:
December 31, 2006 - A passport will be required for all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
December 31, 2007 - The passport requirement will be extended to all land border crossings as well as air and sea travel. |

It is not official but in 2007 it will be required. But you will definitely need your birth certificate and a picture i.d.(drivers license). |

No...the law will be in effect starting in december of this year or january of 2007...
so for now you don't need one, but they take a while to get and cost a bit of money...so you can go without one this summer, but I would suggest getting one so you have it by the time you need to go back :) |

If you are an American citizen and you don't have a passport just take your birth certificate. If you are a permanent legal resident you will need your green card and your passport, the same if you have the conditional status. If you are just visiting States depending on the country you're coming from, you might need a visa. |

Because canada is not part of the USA, therefore needs a passport for you to cross the borders. |

Until January 2007, you can still enter Canada using a goverment issued photo ID like a State ID or Drivers License and a Raised Seal Birth Certificate (Original). Voter's Registration cards can also be used, though it is ALWAYS recommended to use a passport when travelling outside of the USA, and starting January 2007 it will be required. |
