Chris H got it right. The others didn't.

Flying you don't need a passport unless you connect in Vancouver (Alaska has two flights a day that do).

Flying to/from Canada you definitely need a passport and CONSIDER that you might need to fly home from Whitehorse or Prince George or whereever if you get sick or your mom dies or something.

Driving you don't need a passport until 2008 (they keep extending it). But you need a birth certificate and photo ID (driver's license). A passport is easier and only about $80.

No handguns! The Canadians are serious about that.

The drive up the "Alcan" is a great adventure. Have fun.

Only if you are stopping in Canada first.

From one US state directly to another, you do not need a passport to fly there. It would make your time at the airport a little easier (from my experience) but isn't needed. You would need one if you were stopping in Canada. Eventually, you will need one if you are driving through Canada, but at the moment you don't. If you are planning to take any tours while you are in Alaska, it's better to have a passport with you as parts of Alaska and Canada intertwine and you might be asked. I was asked once on a tour and that was long before 9-11-01.

Better safe than sorry. Have fun.

If you are from Canada - yes.

no, it's part of the u.s. and one doesn't need a passport to go to canada.

Yes if you fly, no if you drive, given that you are a Canadian traveling from Canada.

The previous advice that you don't need one for flying is absolutely incorrect, that was the change that came in recently. They are putting off changing the drive in rules because it would cause too much disruption right now, there are already huge queues at the land crossings.
