As of January 2008, you need a passport to fly AND drive to get through our borders.
A passport should be suffice, I don't think you need anything else unless you plan on staying to work or go to school, or if you plan to stay for an extended period of time.
Yes, you can drive a car over, but if you're renting it, check with the rental company before doing so. There are fees associated with it and insurance liabilities that you just won't want to deal with if something goes wrong.
When you're leaving, make sure you've checked with a Canadian Customs Official before you leave to make sure you aren't taking anything home with you that you aren't allowed (ex. more alcohol than you are allowed *although our booze is VERY expensive I doubt you would ;), over spending your allocated amount you can spend here in a certain amount of time, etc.)
**Revise: I guess they extended it till June '09? I didn't know that. My bad. The rest still applies.
***Second revise: Go to this site :)

If you were going to fly into Canada, yes you would need a passport. If you are going to drive over the border, then all you need is a government issued ID (drivers license) and a birth certificate with a raised seal. You don't need a passport to drive over until 2009.
-Edit- The birth certificate has to be a certified true copy with a raised seal. The border guards are very fussy. I live in a border town, so I know. |

No, you don't need a passport to drive ... not until June 2009.
But it's not a dumb question -- because so many people still haven't heard about these rule changes, and because therules have changed so many times! Stay current by bookmarking the Homeland Security and State Department sites below, and checking them before you travel.
Or, better yet, apply for a passport now, so you'll have one and you'll be ready for any sort of travel, no matter what the rules are! |

Open this link. Straight from the Dept of Homeland Security's website.
YOU DO NOT NEED A PASSPORT TO CROSS INTO CANADA OR COME BACK TO THE US UNLESS YOU ARE TRAVELING BY AIR!
What you need is a State issued drivers license and a birth certificate. Save your money until next time! Passports start in 2009. |

You can still drive over to Canada WITHOUT a passport. After the summer of next, however, a passport will be required. As of right now, you only need a passport if you fly, NOT drive. I have no idea why some people are telling you that you need on now because you don't. All you need to drive in is your drivers license and your birth certificate. If you plan on going to Canada next summer however, apply for your passport now. I believe it's June or July of 2009 that they will be required for all travel. |

You don't need one to get *into* Canada, but you need one to get *back* into the US.
BTW. That is an excellent trip. I've done it a few times (used to live in Spokane).
