As always there are some very strange answers here on Yahoo! and of course the majority are wrong.
Being a permanent resident does not make you eligible to travel visa-free into Canada. It all depends on the nationality of your passport.
Holding a greencard as no bearing on your right to visa-free travel to any country, not just Canada.
To determine if you can travel visa free visit the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website which I have provided below. If you are national/citizen of one of the countries listed then you will need a visa to gain entry into Canada, along with your passport.
If your country is not listed then you will not need a visa to enter. Just take your passport and proof of residency.
Some people really should do some research or at least know what they are talking about before they answer such questions of importance. |

If you are driving (or taking the ferry) you need a Birth certificate and a Drivers license. They want IDs. They "might" ask you questions--how long and why and where you are going. |

No, you don't need a visa but you may need a valid passport. I know that as a Canadian, I need a valid passport if I cross the border to the USA. I'm not sure how the laws work at the border for US citizens visting Canada. You will definitely need a visa if you plan on working here though. |

No you do NOT need a passport or Visa if you are an american citizen. Just show your photo ID at the border when appreaching customs. They will usually ask how long you plan on staying, why you are going to Canada, what your plans are, etc. The same goes for Entering back into the US. Some Customs agents will search your vehicle, don't worry this is NORMAL! They are not targeting you, just making sure your not bringing anything illegal back into the country. Just remember that in Jan. 2008 you WILL need a passport to leave the United States. So plan ahead if going to Canada in 2008. |
