As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

(There are a few incorrect answers above.)
No. You do not need a passport if you're crossing the boarder by car.

However... A few weeks ago it became manditory to have a passport if travelling to/from Canada by plane.
In about a year and a half, a passport will be required for all travel between Can and US.

Max
I think they wii starting January 2008. This something that has come about recently.

You do not need a passport to enter Canada by Car, But the US government will require you to present a passport to re-enter the US.

Cariad
Travelling TO Canada is not what you need to know about. What you need to know about is the "entry/re-entry" to the USA. (this is a US based rule, and the US does not decide what Canada does to protect its borders)

If you are travelling by land or by sea to "enter/re-enter" the USA, you do not need a passport until at the earliest, January 2008. You can use a passport as ID if you do have one. Otherwise, a government issued photo ID (drivers license) and birth certificate (orginal, to prove citizenship) can be used.

FYI, air travel to "enter/re-enter" the USA requires a passport effective January 23, 2007.

Some travel sites recommend a passport to be used as your ID because if your wallet is stolen, it is much easier to get a passport sent to you in Canada.

Yes! Once you hit the border of Canada, you will need to show your passport! It is the new policy that effect January 22. By the end of 2007, if yoy travel out of country regardless of what country you travel, you will need a passport! this will effect until Jan 2008.

no, not until 2008.
But you will need a photo ID and your birth certificate.

not at the moment but very soon you will have too so it is advisable.
