Do US citizens need a passport for a 1 day trip to Vancouver, BC?

We just got invited to an event (baby dedication) of our friends baby near Vancouver. It's on March 11th. I have a passport but it is expired I believe. My wife doesn't have a passport yet but she's a citizen. Is there any way we could make it?

If you are flying, you will need one, but if you are driving, you don't--yet.

"The NAFTA countries: the United States, Canada, and Mexico, although after an announcement on September 2, 2005[9] (Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative), all persons entering the United States, including its own citizens, will be required to have a passport, even from Canada and Mexico, starting January 23, 2007 for air travel. On January 1, 2008, the passport requirement will also be extended to all sea and land border crossings."

If you are driving no, if you are flying yes. This year all flights to Canada need a current passport. Next year land and sea passages will require passports too. So for now you can drive into Canada with your driver's license and birth certificate.

The length of the stay doesn't matter too much. As in the border is the point of interception, if you are saying you are staying a day, a week or a month, they still have your attention only when you are crossing, so it is the same standard required for everyone.

travelling by car, no passport is needed(until Jan 2008),, you ,just need a good form of USA id(driver's license) to get back into the states. Make sure all who travel with you have some sort of ID.. have fun...

If you are flying, you need a passport. If you are driving, you can get by with photo ID (until next year, when you will need a passport for automobile travel as well.)
What do you mean when you say your wife is a citizen? Of which country? If she's Canadian, she'll need ID the same as you will.

Pichi
Please take note that to get into Canada by land you only need an official photo ID (drivers license, military ID, state ID), HOWEVER, in order to return to the U.S. you will need proof of citizenship as well. Usually a birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or Permanent residency card. You "may" be okay without it, but it will take longer and be more of a hassle.

Also, if you stop to purchase anything, keep the receipts.

No we do not. The US and Canada share an open border act. All you need to show is some form of state ID.

You can still travel into Canada by car without a passport

Since the 23rd of Jan you do if you fly.
The regulations for surface travel are in the process of change. Getting into Canada is still easy.
Going South, different game, Homeland security is so paranoid.

Thank GWB
