Do US citizens need a passport to travel in Canada?

Currently, U.S. citizens in most cases need to show only driver's licenses to reenter this country from Mexico and Canada, though officials said that since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, some officials at border crossings at times have asked for additional documents.
**BUT**
Americans will be required to show passports when they reenter the United States from Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean by 2008 under new rules announced by the State and Homeland Security departments.

No you don't. Make sure you have some form of ID. But when traveling you should always take your passport.

Not at the moment, but the US will require passports for all Canadian travelers starting in 2007.

HunnyMommy
you need a passport to travel anyway outside US territories

I was just in Canada last year, and we were required to show a valid U.S. Driver's license AND official copies of our birth certificates, as well as our marriage certificates.

In a couple of years, passports will be mandatory. It sucks.

the new law start January first 2007 for Canadian who want travel to u.s.a by airplane and by border with your vehicle it start only the January first 2008. But for the American who born in state they don't need a passport just the paper like driving license only that.

You need "proof of citizenship." This would be BOTH a drivers' license and a certified (raised seal) copy of your birth certificate. However, a passport makes life so much easier and is definately worth having.

Not yet but in the future yes

It's easiest to use a passport. If you're driving you may be able to use a driver's license and birth certificate (needs to be a notorized certificate, not a copy). If you're flying, you probably need the passport.

I would assume so.

I need a passport when going from Canada to the USA.

vedita

yars232c
No, your Driver's License is good enough.

No, but American's are going to make Canadians need one in a couple months.

vivi
No, not yet. but in 2007-8 they will need passports - not so much to visit Canada as to be able to go back home afterwards. The regulations requiring passports for Canadian and U.S. citizens going back and forth across this border come from the U.S. government therefore Canadians will need a passport to get into the U.S. and U.S. citizens will need a passport to get back into their own country.

Currently, and supposedly, you don't need a passport. BUT, when my sister and I went to Calgary from Chicago, i had my passport with me and sailed through customs. She had her photo-id, and took longer going through customs, both ways.

So, if you have time, i'd get it. It's not that difficult.
