Do bars and restaurants take US currency? |
Someone I know went to Canada recently and said that bars and restaurants took her US money and gave her change back in Canadian currency. She went to Niagra Falls but I'm going to Montreal. I was wondering if that happened with her because Niagara Falls is so close to the border and if they'll do it in Montreal since it's a little further from the border. Thanks |

Yes most businesses in Canada accept US Dollars no worries |

most large stores will do so but some of the smaller ones prefer that you use Canadian funds. You will also get a better excjamge rate at a bank. |

Most places will accept US funds. They take your bill and convert it to Canadian on their exchange rate policy nd therefore give you Canadian change.
However, the exchange rate isn't usually very good. And given the huge fluctuations in daily exchange rates, a business is likely to give you even worse exchange to protect themselves. As in if they checked the rate at the beginning of the month, then collected money from you a week later, and put it in the bank the next day, the rate they get from the bank might be horrible, so they will likely charge that risk to you up front. |

Because of the parity between US dollars and CAD dollars, some restaurants and bars have stopped accepting American money because it actually costs them more to exchange it at the bank.
If they do accept US currency, do not expect a great exchange rate. I would think that presently, some places may be taking US dollars at par, meaning that US$1.00 = CAD$1.00. However, that would be more as a courtesy to the American tourist.
Don't forget that you can use your American credit cards here (Visa, Mastercard, some places American Express) to pay for most restaurant, hotel, or car rental bills.
You can also use your bank ATM card at most bank machines here in Montreal, as they are part of the Plus and/or Interac network. You take out the money in Canadian funds and your bank will withdraw that cash, doing the conversion automatically at that day's exchange rate. Keep in mind that the bank ATM here may charge you a service fee of $1.00 to $3.50 for that "inter-bank transfer". |

Majority will (NOT ALL THOUGH )because the owners since its at par at banks they pay an exchange rate to have it converted
don't expect more than its value as its at par .You will get change back OF COURSE in Canadian currency .You can also use your debit and credit card |

It really depends on the place. But remember, your US money is not worth as much as ours, so bring extra!!!!!:)
Would you use USD in China. Have some courtesy and exchange your money or people will think you are ignorant for assuming everyone wants your US bills. |
