Well, I'm Canadian.
I've heard of the term "Hollywood North". In actuality, many movies produced by Hollywood are filmed in Canada because it's cheaper.
I would imagine that Hollywood North would refer to Vancouver and Toronto as they are considered our cultural capitals and films are often shot in these locations, either in their suburbs or in outlying areas or the cities themselves. Although, I know that Calgary has had its fair share of filming as well.
Also, the Toronto International Film Festival has gained very positive reputation and premieres many of the films that debut in the Oscar season, including some independently produced gems.
Although, I will say, without knowing personally, that Hollywood North is less about glitz and glamour and more about the acting craft. Don't get me wrong, we have red carpet affairs and whatnot but, in my eyes at least, I see a different mentality behind Canada's version of Hollywood.
So it's less about having a place for people to idolize for its extravagance, we don't actually have a Hollywood, but the figurative "Hollywood North" does exist. |
