No not yet later in the near future they will impose this rule, but for now a state id or birth certificate will do

Church Music Girl
Not yet... that law is slated to go into effect in 2007. You do need Photo ID and proof of US citizenship (or green card) to enter Canada

http://www.meetings.canada.travel/ctc/mcit/things-to-know3.jsp?cat=1245 says:

"Identification at the Border - U.S. Citizens

Although a passport is the ideal identification, at this time, you do not require a passport or visa to enter Canada. Just make sure you carry identification to establish your citizenship such as a Birth Certificate and least one ID card with photo. If you are a naturalized U.S. citizen, you should carry this certificate. Permanent residents of the U.S.A. must bring their "Green Card". "

Although US Customs will usually let you back in to the country with a state ID, the legal requirement is proof of identity and proof of citizenship. For example, a state ID *AND* an original or certified birth certificate.

From the Department of State:
U.S. citizens who travel to a country where a valid U.S. passport is not required will need documentary evidence of their U.S. citizenship and identity. Proof of U.S. citizenship includes an expired U.S. passport or an original birth certificate. A certified copy of the birth certificate is also acceptable, but it must have the registrar’s signature and a raised, impressed, embossed, or multicolored seal. If you were born abroad, a Certificate of Naturalization, Certificate of Citizenship, or Report of Birth Abroad of a Citizen of the United States will suffice. To prove identity, a valid driver’s license or government identification card are acceptable provided they identify you by physical description or photograph.

(Note: This is expected to change in 2007)

It depends on your citizenship.

No you won't need a passport until next year. You need to bring with you your birth certificate and driver's license. Niagara Fall's is a beautiful place but very commercial. We stayed on the Canada side with a view of the falls. It was incredible (and pricey -whoa).

I think a birth certificate or a valid ID will suffice. I do not know these days though...

You need proof of citizenship (birth certificate or passport) and state issued photo ID (drivers licence, or passport)

If you do not have a passport, it's ok but make sure you bring the two others. A birth certificate will not have your picture, so it's not enough: I could use my neighbor's!

As for the driver's licence, it's NOT proof of citizenship: I am not an american citizen, however I have an Arizona driver's licence. You need *both*.

If still in doubt, call a travel agency.

You're good for Canadian entry with picture ID and something that shows your citizenship, but George W. has been making noises on a regular basis about implementing passports for EVERYONE entering the US. That includes US citizens. So it's just a matter of when he decides to set the deadline. Latest info is that it will be at the end of Dec. this year. But he could just as easily say it's going to be Oct. 31, Trick or Treat!
It's just as easy to have one and it simplifies travel wherever you want to go.

Hi, I don't think that you do if your driving, however you should bring it along just in case. It would be so uncool if you get there and the only thing holding you back is your passport.bye :)

Toni_busy
You need a passport to come into the country AND also to get back home.
