The "yeses" are correct...boy did you get some nutty answers. It has been the law since Jan. 2007 that you must have a passport for ALL international flights. you wll not be allowed on the plane without one. see site below and read carefully...then Call you airline to confirm this. |

I know you don't need a passport to get from canada into the states.
Not sure if it's the same for the opposite.
Nevermind, you do if you're going by plane. |

Yes. All people traveling into Canada by plane from the US will require a passport. |

If you are an American citizen you do NOT need a passport to fly to Canada, but you will need one to fly back into the US. If you do not have a passport, you can do what many others have been doing and fly into Canada on a birth certificate and driver's licence and then cross the border by land and fly out of Seattle. You can still cross into the US by land and sea until apparently June 2009 on a birth cert and driver's licence.
I flew to Phoenix last year and my friend lost her passport while there. She showed her other Canadian gov't ID on the flight home and the agents couldn't refuse her because you don't need a passport to fly into Canada.
This is not a Canadian law. Canada has no plans to require their citizens or travellers from the US to have a passport. It is the US that is requiring them. |

You don't need a passport to get into Vancouver, and you don't need one yet to get into Canada but you will need a government picture ID such as a driver's licence, and proof of US citizenship such as a birth certificate.
You will most definitely need a passport to get back into the US if you're flying. If you're going back to the US any other way, you can still use the above mentioned picture ID and citizenship proof. |

You may be able to fly into Canada without a passport but if you plan on flying back into the US from Canada you are out of luck. The following rules reflect those for people entering the US from Canada:
The strictest regulations regarding crossing the border relates to crossing into the US from Canada. These rules were put into place by the US Department of Homeland Security as a result of 9/11 and subsequent events. The rules for crossing into Canada are not as strict however as these rules generally are adjusted to coincide with US regulations they can be taken as requirements for crossing both ways. Currently the rules for border crossings are as follows:
By Air: A valid passport only
By Land: A valid passport; OR; valid government issued ID (i.e. a Driver’s License) and an official birth certificate. If you are a naturalized citizen then you should also bring your Citizenship Card (if you do not have your passport that is). If you are a landed immigrant then you should bring identification certifying that you are legally in the country.
By Sea: Same requirements as for land
If you have a passport this is the best form of ID and should be the only ID required to cross the border so, if you have one, I would suggest that you use it.
The Department of Homeland Security had proposed to make a passport the only acceptable form of ID effective as of January, 2008. This regulation was postponed by them until July, 2008 and has been further postponed by Congress until 2009. Although several dates have been proposed there is no set date for the implementation of this regulation. Based upon various reports the likely implementation time period will be sometime from March to July, 2009. In addition to this other forms of acceptable ID are in process or being tested. This includes a passport card (in the US) and enhanced Driver’s Licenses (current being tested in parts of Canada) which may be acceptable in place of a passport for travel. |

I know they were changing the rules and said you would be needing one but then I was told they extended the dates on that.
Check with TSA [the website] and see if it is required.
If it is required and you can't use an ID and birth certificate [you may need the original] I suggest you cancel travel plans and try not to loose too much money!! |
