Do i need a visa for visiting Canada for 6 months?

I am planning on going to Canada and staying for 6 months. I've heard that you get a 6 months stamp n your passport which allows you to stay for 6 months.

However i have also heard you need a visitor visa to be allowed to stay for 6 months. Does anyone know which one is correct or have different information?

Thanks.

Oh and i forgot to mention im from Scotland UK

Certain nationalities require a visa to enter Canada regardless of length of stay. Others can enter for some period of time without a visa.

Citizens of the Commonwealth of Nations (Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, etc) can be allowed to enter without a visa for stays up to a maximum of six months. You'll still have to prove financial solvency, that there are stronger ties abroad than you'll have in Canada, and so forth. This proof is required at time of entry to Canada ... to whoever is manning the port-of-entry. The duration of your stay is determined by the individual who's checking you into the country, and may actually be less than the maximum allowable limit.

Similarly, citizens of the US may enter Canada without a visa for stays up to and including 90 days ... subject to the same criteria (financial solvency, stronger ties abroad, etc). The actual duration will be determined at the time of entry by the individual manning the checkpoint, and may be less than the maximum limit.

To determine if your nationality requires a visa, see the attached link.

Also note - the above information only applies if you are entering as a TOURIST. If you are coming with the intent to work or study, you MUST have the appropriate visa.

Unless you are a citizen of the US or Mexico arriving by land or sea (until the end of January, at least), you might not get your passport stmaped for a tourist visit. Any other nationality - or those who travel by air - WILL have their passports stamped with the appropriate entry and exit dates.

The port of entry officer (POE) in Canada will determine how long you are authorized to stay in Canada. Most visitors are accorded a 6 months stay. If the POE officer authorizes a stay of less than 6 months, he/she will indicate in your passport the date by which you must leave Canada. If, for whatever reason, you want to stay longer in Canada than your authorized stay, you must apply for an extension at least 6 weeks prior to the authorized end of your stay. Please visit Citizenship and Immigration Canada for more information.

You don't actually say you are a UK citizen, so check this website to be sure of the requirements for your nationality: http://www.delta.com/planning_reservations/plan_flight/international_travel_information/visa_passport_information/index.jsp
