Crossing from Canada into the U.S. by land or sea requires at least a birth certificate and driver's license (or military ID, or something to that effect). New regulations require a passport when traveling by air and these will probably impact land and sea travel beginning in 2008.

I have one friend who attended Western Washington University and managed to cross the border every weekend with no birth certificate, but that was several years ago and things have become much tighter.

This, of course, assumes that you're a Canadian citizen. If you're a citizen of another country, you'll need a passport and possibly a visa.

Check out the Canada Border Services Agency if you need more info.

Yes you do.
Land = walking, train and bus.
Birth certifacat (if born in Canada) plus a piece off govenment issued photo id.
Air and sea
Passport.

Passport is always the best

I think that you do have to now. Check at the office where you get passports from and they will be able to tell you.

Until the end of the year your birth certificate and a government issued photo ID (such as a driver's license) will do. However, a Passport will be required after that.

If you had a NEXUS card crossing the border would be greatly simplified.

nope, but the tricky thing is you need ID to get back

supposedly in January of 2008, you will be required to obtain a passport to cross from Canada into the United States.

you can still cross border in to u.s illegally via remote vermont state, becareful for 'em drunking hunters they shot anyone that look darker as a deer skin.
