Do i need my passport to drive through Canada?

I am going to be taking a cross country trip from Mass to Wyoming. The shortest route is through Canada. I'm going to be staying out west for over a month so my car will be packed. I'm also bringing my cat with me...I don't have a current passport, if I'm just passing through, do I need it? Or should i not bother and add another day to my trip and stay in the US?

You shouldn't need a passport, but they probably won't let you in with your cat so I'd just add another day. Also, if you do decide to try, make sure you bring a lot of documentation that you're really going to Wyoming because trying to enter the country with a fully packed car looks suspiciously like you might be trying to move. They always give me a hard time if it looks like I have too much stuff for the day or two I say I'll be staying.

You do not need a passport to go to Canada by land until Jan. 2008. Go to travel.state.gov to read the regulations for yourself. you DO need your birth certificate.

To go to Canada you need a passport or citizenship document.

Fleur de Lis
Yes, Charlie is right. You will need one Jan 2007 for Air Travel, but 2008 for land travel.

To travel by road into Canada from the USA you will need a piece of photo ID (usually a drivers license) and your original birth certificate. (a photo copy will NOT be accepted). That is in effect by road until January 20008.

To travel by AIR and SEA is when you need a passport as of January 23, 2007. Not yet. A passport could make your border crossing easier, but is not required by road.

Make sure you book an appnt for your cat in the month before your trip. You will need proof of current rabies vaccine and a letter from your vet stating your cat is healthy. Also, take a lot of pictures of your cat to have with you in case the cat decides to bolt. Have a collar with your contact info and someone else's that may be easier to reach put on your cat too. If the cat has a microchip, make sure that info is correct too. Either givethe microchip company your cell phone number or a friend who can help while you are in transit.

Good luck to you; my cat sure doesnt like road trips. :)

You do not need a passport to drive into Canada, a birth certificate and drivers licence is sufficient. Make sure you have all proper documentation on your cat (rabies tags and certificates) or you will be denied entry.

bring your passport...I live in michigan and for the most part it depends on which border into the US you cross. Most poeple that I have known have been stopped for up to 2 hours without passports; or some other form of Us citizenship proof. and soon enough it will be mandatory for you to have Passport to enter Canada from the US due to new laws that are going to be placed into effect due to 9/11

You do NOT need a passport to enter Canada but as of 2008 you will need one to get back into the USA (thanks to Bush and the paranoid Congress), but one is highly recommended. Otherwise
Canada immigration and customs is likely to take more time asking questions and for other ID documentation, especially at
more trafficked crossing points like at Buffalo and Niagara (I assume you are planning to enter Canada there). If your car is to be really packed I suggest you have a typed list of your items to
hand over to Canada customs; that and an explanation of the intention for your trip may save you from having your car searched (but do not depend on that for your re-entry to the US; American customs more often are ***-holes than are Canadian). As for rules on pets you need to check, either on the net or call the Canadian consulate in Boston AND also call the US Customs office nearest to you; I'm sure you will need some documents attesting to your cat having rabies innoculations and perhaps some others.

As for the extra day of travel if you take the all-USA route, I advise you that if you are driving to Wyoming before April you should be budgeting several extra days, anyway, for the possibility of getting
delayed and detained by winter storms and Great Lakes effects
blizzards.
