U.S. Citizens not required to have passport for "land and sea" travel to Canada (till june 2009) you need a government issued photo id such as your drivers license and your original birth certificate.

No, Passport's aren't necessary until June 2009.
People... she's DRIVING, therefore she doesn't need a passport. Flying is another story.

As of January 23, 2007 all AIR travel to and from Mexico and Canada requires a US Passport.
Land or sea travel does not require a US Passport yet, but it is highly recommended for security and other reasons. If traveling by land or sea without a US passport you must have a birth certificate or other proof of U.S. citizenship and proper ID and be prepared for a potentially longer stay at the Customs Desk.

You only got 2 correct answers so far. See site below to see for yourself that passports are not yet needed for land travel to and from Canada.

Coming to Canada is not affected yet. You need your proof of citizenship (birth certificate) and government issued photo ID (your drivers license)
Going back into the USA is where you may be affected. Given the time you are coming, it will not affect you. Going back to the USA by land will not require a passport until June of 2009.
If I could make a suggestion.... a passport will make your trip simpler. Some border crossings have lines specifically for passport holders and they go much faster. Also, if you lose your birth certificate, it is MUCH harder to get a replacement in time to not disrupt your trip as compared to getting a passport replaced. A passport takes place of both requirements to get across the border each way. (I know you will have a drivers license with you anyways...but if you lose your birth certificate it is hard to get a new one...and waiting even a week in Canada with hotel bills etc....you can see my reasoning...)
Have a safe trip.

Yes, you do need a passport I believe. I went on a trip there last summer and they wouldn't let me pass with my ID.
It took (2? 3? weeks) for me to receive my passport via mail, and its nice because now I can come/go from/to Canada or any other non-USA country without all the fuss.

yea you need a passport now, its pretty f***in' stupid...
see the way it works is that you get INTO canada with just your license but they won't let you back into the States without a passport.

I don't think the states allows anyone in without a passport. Canada accepts a driver's license.
