No - just a birth certifcate and photo ID. By the end of 2007 you will need a passport to cross a border by land. If traveling by air or sea, you will need to get a passport by the end of 2006. I know its strange. |

To get back in you'll need proof of citizenship, so a passport or your birth certificate. |

Not until Dec. 2006 if traveling via air or ship and not until Dec. 2007 when traveling by car. Until then it expedites your entry signifigantly to have your passport but you can still get in with just photo ID and your birth certificate:
December 31, 2006 – Passport required for all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
December 31, 2007 – Passport required for all land border crossings, as well as air and sea travel |

Not yet. Getting into Canada is easy... getting back into the US is the problem.
For 14 and older you will need photo ID that shows your country of origin. Kids under 14 (and anyone to be certain) need an official (raised seal) birth certificate.
Oh by the way don't take any firearms, knives, or pepper spray. And keep in mind cigarettes and booze are taxed and crossing the border with more than a fair share will trigger a search. |

not yet. you need proof of us citizenship such as birth certificate or passport, and a valid picture ID (such as driver's license). You'll need a passport next year (or 2008, depending on how you travel to canada).

Currently, you do not NEED a passport to cross, but it is recommended that you HAVE one. The border is still open to Canadian Citizens who can provide a valid piece of government identification (Driver's License, Age of Majority Card) on demand, if requested.
This policy is on the verge of changing though, as teh US is ramping up tighter security at the borders. There are plans to create a 'SuperCard' in Canada that will act as a form of Government-certified identification that can be used in a variety of places... health card... identification... etc. |
