I have been hearing about this topis since I was a child .
The Quebecois at one point wanted to be part of france but when a politician went their they found out france was not very interested. They want to be independant but yet have the rest of Canadians still subsidize many of their programs like health care !!! Which I find ridiculous..
I saw a whole program on CBC which I wish they would bring on again from a few years ago .A guy from Quebec traded places with a guy from Calagary. The guy from Quebec was welcome and treated good in calagry by the other guys family and friends while the other guy in MOntreal was ignored by the Quebecois.
The Quebec guy said he felt Quebec is different because they do not speak English and have a different culture ...which I then asked in my mind does he realize Canada is multicultural and how many people come to Canada with different cultures and languages but repect each other still.
MOst part I find people in Montreal want to belong to the rest of Canada....I personally think if they want to be seperate they can always leave Canada and move to France .:):)

i don't know about everyone in Canada, but think that Quebec should stay with Canada because it represents the French history in our country, and Canada would not be Canada if it was not for the French.

it depends where you are in Canada. With such a massive country, the views of the people are really different in different areas. The west is apathetic for the most part, while Quebec is about 50 50 on the issue. The east cares a bit more than the west, as New Brunswick and parts of Ontario have a large french population.

So I guess I would say it really depends who you ask...

I think most Canadians insist that Quebec remain part of the country.

Within Quebec, separtism has gone down steadily since the 1995 referendum. Generally speaking, no one is really in favour of separatism in Canada, mostly because they know it would be such a hit to the political economy of the nation. Within Quebec, separatists tend to live in more rural, francophone areas.

Generally speaking, there isn't much feeling of separatism here in Canada, but rather regionalism--that is to say a belief that because one comes from an area (a province, territory, or even city) one is automatically better.

bittersweet, playingforkeeps and Annie C. all make valid points

The issue has been going on for far too long...pretty much the length of this country's history has seen division and strife along French/English lines and a faction in Quebec who will never be happy.

I have lived in different parts of the country, spoken to people about this issue from all over Canada, and currently live in Quebec.

I can tell you that the majority of people outside of Quebec and many living in Quebec are fed up with the separatists.

They understand that Quebec could not survive outside out of Canada and are sick of the waste of money and resources on this issue.

I think they wish that Quebec stay but are fed up with the continuous baby crying.French is not unique to Quebec.Manitoba have a French minority and most provinces do.

Annie
The west is not apathetic about it, perhaps you are? Westerners feel very strongly about the Western part of Canada and there is a bit of an independent spirit there. Many feel like they should be part of their own separate country, because they have the lions share of oil and money.

They resent Quebec's attempts to be independent, as they feel that the Eastern part of Canada has much more power politically,(mainly the demographics of Ontario and Quebec's population) which is true.

Although the costal regions of Canada such as the Maritime provinces are much too far away, their populations are small as well. In places like Newfoundland and Labrador they are still uncertain if they wish to become an integral part of Canada as they are still territories. The other Maritime provinces have little clout politically, just because of the small voting populations.

Canada's real problem rests in the fact that it is a geographic nightmare to unite politically.

As for Quebec, well I'm a Quebecer, I'm one of the 51% who voted to stay in Canada.

itssoeasy
well, being from Quebec, I notice that its pretty mixed. there's some people that would like to separate and some people who don't. As for the rest of Canada, I'm not quite sure where they stand but I do know for a fact that they are fed up of hearing about quebec separating stories so am I. So I think they should stay together and then we can all be happy and lalala...

Most want it to stay as part of Canada. If Quebec became independent it would split Canada in two geographically. The result would be two economically weak states instead of one strong and unified state.

If you ask an ignorant hillbilly from the West, chances are they will make a racial slur and support this idea.

If you ask a sane, professional, or wise student, or even just a normal person chances are they will be vehemently against this idea.

I know many people who are frustrated that they can't speak French (or won't try to learn) in Eastern Ontario and they feel that if Quebec separates they will no longer need Ottawa to be a bilingual city.

I lived in Montreal for the past 5 years, I am originally from Northern Ontario but I have spent great amounts of time in western Canada as well, and I find the most ingorance about Quebec comes from Alberta and British Columbia while people east of there tend to be against separartion from Canada.

PS: to the above poster, they do speak English in Montreal and I have never been discriminated against for speaking English, nor snubbed, etc. THe people in Quebec are normal people and if you read the news or listen to a nutcase like Ezra Levant, you will believe other wise, but the only way to understand to Quebec is to come here with an open mind and no hostility yourself!

I am sure you will find the people in QUebec to be warm and kind, though they do have a bitof their own culture, you have to remember Quebec is part of Canada and the culture is no different then taking someone from Alberta and someone from Ontario and comparing them, each province has their own culture to an extent.

This is pretty much a dead issue really. Since the Canadian gov't made it clear that they would not allow them to trade in Canadian dollars a few years back. They know they don't have the resources to survive.

Quebec has such a rich and unique culture that adds a lot to an already diversified nation. I would be really sad, if they should ever separate :(
